Sometimes you meet a woman who gives back and inspires you to do the same. For us, Susan Spurrell is that woman. Tonight at Junior Friends Toast to Fashion, we are honored to recognize Susan as the recipient of The Unsung Hero Award. A vital member of Junior Friends and supporter of The Campagna Center since 2011, as well as a supporter of other charitable organizations, Susan inspires us to continue to give our very best to The Campagna Center.

About Susan:
Susan joined the Junior Friends in 2011. She was looking for an organization where she could push back her sleeves and help the community. She felt the Campagna Center was the right place, as the organization not only helps the Alexandria community by supporting families and youth, but also improves the school systems and strengthens the community.

Since joining the Junior Friends, Susan immediately became a familiar face and someone known for diving right in. She has worked on Heather and Greens, Scottish Christmas Walk Parade, the Toast to Fashion and last year’s Platinum Gala. While a member of the Junior Friends since 2011, Susan is not new to volunteering, she has been a member of the Junior League since 1996 and a founding member of the Dooley Noted Society in Richmond, Virginia.

An alumnus of Sweet Briar College and current resident of Old Town, Susan currently practices dental hygiene in Old Town and D.C. She enjoys adventure travels such as hiking the Inca Trail and rafting in the Grand Canyon or visiting her families vacation home in Newfoundland, Canada. Susan is also grateful for Brian Andrews who supports her volunteer efforts and often lends a hand as well.

Alexandria is full of passionate women who strive to make a difference. We are honored to recognize Sue Goodhart at Junior Friends Toast to Fashion for her giving heart and desire to impact positive change in our community and in our kids. Sue is the recipient of The Golden Halo Award. Sue has been a positive role model for many years, and we are thrilled to celebrate her!

About Sue:
Sue joined the Junior Friends in the early 1980s. As a small business owner in Old Town, Sue wanted to find a way to help out and incorporate the efforts into her busy schedule. She began working on the advertising committee for the Scottish Christmas Walk. Since then, Sue and her husband Marty have been supporters of the events which help the programs of The Campagna Center. They now support through their local real estate business, The Goodhart Group, and have proudly been sponsors over the past few year of the Taste of Scotland.

Sue is proud to support the Campagna Center, not only through sponsorships but through her current tenure on the Development Committee and the Board of Directors. She believes in the Center because it is a living breathing part of the fabric of our community and serves its most important people-- our kids-- as well as those working to improve their lives. She feels that no organization in the City involves so many passionate people seeking to improve the quality of life for so many people who live in Alexandria. It is inspiring every day to see so many hands doing so much good!

Sue has called Alexandria home for the past 35 years. When not working as a local realtor, or volunteering, Sue enjoys spending time with her husband, Marty, and daughters, Allison and Amanda. She makes the most of Washington’s vibrant community by proudly cheering on local teams at games, checking out the latest restaurants and shops with friends, and traveling.

At this Thursday’s Junior Friends Toast to Fashion, we will raise our glass as we honor another dear friend, Brooks McElwain. Brooks is the recipient of the Anne Culbert Legacy of Service Award. We thank you for your decade of support to The Campagna Center and your positive contributions to our community. May we all strive to be “more like Brooks!”

About Brooks:
Brooks joined the Junior Friends in 2006. A lawyer by trade, as a new mom, Brooks was looking to find a local organization that she could support with her time and expertise. Brooks credits her parents for instilling in her the importance of volunteering and giving back to your community; not only for personal reward but to demonstrate the responsibility of giving back to your children. While a practicing attorney, Brooks found the most rewarding part of her practice had been serving as a Guardian ad litem for children; this inspired Brooks to find a way to continue to help children who were at risk or vulnerable in the community, she then she discovered The Campagna Center.

Upon joining Brooks loved the enthusiasm of the group of women as well as the importance of The Campagna Center to the community. To date, Brooks continues to be a huge advocate of the Center and of Junior Friends bringing in many new members. In addition to her many hours of volunteering at events, Brooks has served as Social Chair and Hospitality Chair. She finds it rewarding to see the impact of the Center on our community, and to feel a small part of that with the funds we raise for the programs that directly serve so many families.

Originally from Newport News, Virginia, Brooks, along with her husband Mike and their children; Walker, 7, and Samantha, 9, currently reside in Waynewood neighborhood of Alexandria.

Another highlight of Junior Friends Toast to Fashion is recognizing some incredible women who volunteer time and money to support The Campagna Center and our local children and families. We are honored to recognize Jennifer Mellon as the recipient of the Barbara Pratt Lee Heart of Gold Award. Thank you, Jen, for your support and dedication. Cheers to you, our friend!

About Jen:
Jen joined Junior Friends in the spring of 2008. At the time serving as a non-profit Executive Director for a large international child welfare organization, she wanted to give back to children and families in her own community. As a new wife and mom, she was lacking two important things in her life: a core group of friends and an organization with which she could give of her herself. The Campagna Center fulfilled that and so much more. Since that time, she has watched The Campagna Center serve the least of our neighbors with programs that are truly changing the lives of so many families. She also met her very best friends, women who are more like family than friends.

Over the last 8 years, she has served as Chair of the Junior Friends, serving on the The Campagna Center Board and Development Committee. She also served on the Junior Friends' Board as Vice Chair, Secretary, Toast to Fashion Co-Chair and Co-Chair of the very first Bowties & Belles.

Originally from New Jersey, Jen lives in the Waynewood neighborhood of Alexandria with her husband, Danny Boice, and their 5 children, Caroline, Leah Claire, Nolan, Jordie and Daniel. Jen and Danny founded Trustify, a supporter of The Campagna Center, which offers affordable private investigators on demand.
