I never thought I would need to make a post like this, but after trying to handle this privately, I feel it’s important to share.
I recently discovered that Flowers in Los Angeles & Honolulu was using images of my floral work on their website to advertise their own services. This was not an inspiration image. This was a photograph of a design I created being presented on another florist’s website.
I reached out privately and asked my work to be removed. Not only is it a misrepresentation of their work, but the amazing photographer, Patty Betts | East Coast Wedding Photographer did not give them permission to use her photo for advertising. They responded promptly and kindly and said they completely understood where I was coming from, and assured me they would take the image down.
But they played in my face.
Instead, they used AI to change the BACKGROUND, while my floral design was left intact.
I reached out again, pointing this out and asking, once again, that my work be removed.
They ignored me.
As a floral designer and a small business owner, I put an incredible amount of time, creativity, labor and resources into every event I design. My portfolio represents 20 years of work and how potential clients decide whether to trust me with one of the most important days of their lives.
Using another florist’s work to advertise your business is not ok. Passing another florist’s work as your own and suggesting it is a part of your portfolio is wrong. Changing the background of that work does not suddenly make it yours. And after being directly told who the work belongs to, there can no longer be any question about whether its continued use is accidental.
I gave Pink Clover Florist the opportunity to handle the situation privately. Since that didn’t happen, I’m sharing the receipts.
Our creative work matters. Our portfolios matter. And other artists’ work deserves to be respected.
