Detergent isn’t soap. And “bar soap” doesn’t automatically mean it’s true soap. 👀

Here’s the simple version:
Traditional handmade soap is made by combining oils/fats + lye, which transforms into soap through a process called saponification.

That creates a bar that cleanses your skin and naturally produces glycerin during the process.

Many mass-market cleansing bars are formulated differently. They’re designed to be consistent, inexpensive, shelf-stable, and great at getting the job done—but they’re not the same thing as a thoughtfully formulated artisan soap.

And this is why I keep telling you:
You don’t need more skincare. You need to understand what you’re actually using.

If pumpkin spice everything makes you want to run the other way… this one’s for you. 🍂

Harvest Spice is the one soap in our fall lineup that doesn’t smell like a sweet dessert. Patchouli, blood orange, and lavender — earthy, a little unexpected, and nothing like a candle aisle.

It’s also the only foam soap in our fall collection styled with star anise instead of cinnamon sticks, because it’s just built differently. If you’ve ever felt like “fall scent” only ever means one thing, we made this one for you.

People often ask where my ideas come from. Honestly? Right here. 🌿

This is the last day of From Garden to Skin, and it’s the one closest to my heart.

When Sawyer’s eczema was at its worst, I started swapping my soap-making grandma’s classic recipes, searching for something that actually helped. Somewhere in that search, I felt a God nudge to build a little website and just list my soap. So I did.

That’s when I started planting, harvesting, and growing right here. I wanted ingredients I could trust — I can’t grow everything, but I wanted to know exactly what was going into what I put on his skin.

Calendula, chamomile, plantain, lavender — these aren’t trendy ingredients. People have valued herbs like these for generations. This garden reminds me to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the process.

Everything you’ve learned this week is exactly why I created our seasonal subscription boxes. Not to give you more — to help you build a simpler, more thoughtful routine with the products I already use and trust myself.

The more skincare I bought, the worse my son’s skin got. 🫣

Welcome to Day 3 of From Garden to Skin — a free 4-day series for the mom who’s tired of researching every ingredient before she trusts it.

I’m Shelly, former sign language interpreter, now soapmaker, because I was desperate to clear my son Sawyer’s eczema.

At one point my bathroom looked like a skincare aisle. Cream, body wash, bubble bath, two lotions I couldn’t even tell apart. 😂 None of it really helped.

Turns out, skin doesn’t need more — it needs consistency. Same soap, same moisturizer, every single day. It’s a lot easier to know what’s actually helping (or irritating) your skin when you’re not layering ten things at once.

Ever tried shampoo bar and thought “these are terrible?” I don’t blame you…and it’s probably not you!

Here’s the thing no one tells you: soap and shampoo aren’t the same, even when they look alike on a shelf. When I started making soap, I figured I’d just make shampoo the same way. I was wrong.

Hair actually wants a different pH than skin does. That’s often why a shampoo bar left your hair waxy or dry — not because bars don’t work, but because it wasn’t made for hair in the first place.
