The Hamziyyah is Imam al-Busiri’s ode in praise of the Prophet ﷺ, a companion in spirit to his more famous Burdah, and one that many students of the tradition consider even more intricate in its craft. Over twenty years after his rendering of the Burdah, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf now brings this second great poem into English, with an introduction that situates the work for the reader coming to it fresh.

The poem itself moves like a journey of love. It touches on the Prophet’s ﷺ blessed life and the era he lived in, recounts his miracles alongside the miracles of the Qur’an, follows a voyage from Cairo to Mecca and Medina, and turns at points to critique of other Abrahamic traditions and to the poet’s own introspection. It is a work that rewards slow, attentive reading, verse building on verse toward its subject.

Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, who has spent fifty-five years immersed in al-Busiri’s poetry, provides the foreword, and states plainly that this translation deserves both praise and celebration. This hardcover edition, presented with a slipcase, is a fitting home for a poem meant to be returned to.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said,

“May Allah illuminate one who hears something from us and relates it just as he heard it, for perhaps the one it is related to understands it more than the one who initially heard it.”

—[Tirmidhi, authentic]

Imam al-Qastallani said this means Allah blesses such a person with splendor and bliss, because he served the radiance of knowledge and sought to revive the Sunna.

Look at where that chain ends. It does not end with scholars. It ends with a child hearing a short sentence for the first time and holding onto it. Every person in that chain, without exception, began there.

Habib Umar bin Hafiz carefully compiled this collection for people standing at that first link. Fifty-nine hadiths, most of them a single line, chosen to help beginners start their lifelong journey of learning.

Every hadith arrives four ways. The Arabic fully vocalised, the English with its source named, a short glossary of the words doing the real work, then what it means and what to take from it.

“The heart wills, while the soul wishes; the heart loves, while the soul desires; the heart hopes, while the soul craves; the heart fears, while the soul despairs.”

In the classical tradition the heart and the soul are not the same thing, and learning to tell them apart is the work of a lifetime. The same act of charity, the same tear, the same gentle word can issue from either one, and the consequences are never the same. Al-‘Aydarus works through the difference with the precision of a physician reading symptoms, and he gives the reader tests to run rather than theory to admire. A man with a hard heart can still weep, he notes, and the weeping proves nothing on its own. A man who owes a debt he will not repay and gives to charity instead has done a good thing that came from the wrong place.

Readers who already keep the practice and want to understand what is happening underneath it. Anyone drawn to the Ba ‘Alawi tradition of Hadramawt and Tarim.

We should say plainly that parts of this book are hard. The author assumes a familiarity with the Islamic sciences and a spiritual vocabulary that many readers will not have yet. It was not written as a first book on the inward life. Read what you can grasp, practice what you understand, and return to it later. The chapters are short and each is broken into titled sections, which makes that kind of reading straightforward.

Imam Ahmad and the Bandits

Written by Anisa Rasul, this ten-volume series aims to bring children, youth, and even adults closer to the doors of Mercy, Contentment, and Divine Love — embodied by the saints of the Islamic tradition. If the first book is any indication, this journey is going to be something truly special.

Book 1 is a treasure for both young and mature hearts. Between its pages are hidden gems waiting to be discovered; each reader will find something they were searching for, as though parts of the story gently complete a piece of their own life’s puzzle. It is beautifully written, deeply meaningful, and an absolute page-turner.

This beautiful project is blessed and supported by Habib Umar bin Hafiz, one of the most revered scholars and men of God of our time. And this is only the beginning — a powerful step toward reviving the storytelling tradition within the Muslim world and reconnecting younger generations to their spiritual heritage.

May Allah keep us close to His Friends, for the greatest love is the love of God — and it is attained through loving those who love Him.

“To know God سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ, one has to open the heart to knowledge that seems beyond our understanding.” — Imam Al-Ghazali

The next book in the Imam Al-Ghazali series for children beautifully uses stories and metaphors to explain profound and often difficult concepts—questions that have sparked endless philosophical debates, such as: Who is God? What is God? And where is Godسُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ?

One particularly touching passage is how the children interpret Imam Al-Ghazali’s trial as profound wisdom from God:

“Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ kindly took away your voice so you could no longer teach, and He made you become a humble cleaner and janitor in the Damascus mosque. Once you became truly empty of all those proud and stuck-up ideas, you became pure and full of light. Then you were finally able to understand the deep and important meanings hidden within every detail of our religion.”

Through this, one learns that only by removing the dust of the ego from the mirror of the spiritual heart can we comprehend true knowledge. Likewise, we must nurture the golden seeds planted within our hearts by watering them daily through the remembrance of God, and by practising what we read and hear from our teachers, so that the roots of the tree of true knowledge within us grow deep and strong, bearing healthy fruits from which we benefit in both this world and the next.
