We set off in pursuit of all things Hemingway and bring to you two out of three: legend has it that while Hemingway may have begun the scar in the bar with his cigar, many patrons contributed to it afterwards. It was very cool to sit where he did for a bit. No one laughs at you. And I highly recommend the jambalaya at the City Park Pub and Grill in Petoskey.

A friend of ours caught up with him in Walloon Lake and snapped this picture. Thanks, Donna!

We somehow managed to miss another statue only a block from the bar but look forward to returning to Petoskey someday to see it. It’s a great little town!

It is an amazing world! This tattered and worn and soiled but significant work compiled and published by two Detroiters in 1968 will be given new life within the community of American Pool Checkers players through the auspices of one very small-town book dealer (who was herself a Detroiter in 1968) and the powerful forces of social media. This legacy of Ramsey and Richardson will carry on and we are so glad we could play a part!

Johnny Got His Gun was required reading at Finney High School in Detroit in the early 70s. As a teacher at Oxford High School twenty years later, I insisted my own students read it. There is a copy available at ReLiteration. It is unforgettable.

Dalton Trumbo was born in 1905 in Montrose, Colorado, and grew up to become one of Hollywood's most gifted screenwriters. By the 1940s, he was one of the highest-paid writers in the business.

In 1947, he was summoned before the House Un American Activities Committee and ordered to name colleagues who may have held communist ties. Trumbo refused, citing his First Amendment rights. For that refusal, he was labeled one of the "Hollywood Ten" and blacklisted from the industry.

In 1950, he was sentenced to eleven months in federal prison for contempt of Congress. Even behind bars, he never named a single name.

Blacklisted but unbroken, Trumbo kept writing under pseudonyms and fronts, secretly winning an Academy Award for "The Brave One" under the name Robert Rich. In 1960, Kirk Douglas publicly credited him for "Spartacus," finally breaking the blacklist. Dalton Trumbo passed away in 1976, remembered as a man who paid everything rather than sell out his friends.
