On this day, 114 years ago on August 7, 1912, Sergei Prokofiev premiered his Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat major, Op. 10 in Moscow.

Prokofiev was just 21 years old when he performed the work himselt as soloist. Bold, energetic, and unapologetically modern tor its time, the concerto immediately showcased the young composer's distinctive voice, brilliant piano writing, sharp rhythms, and biting harmonies that would become hallmarks of his music.

The premiere was conducted by Konstantin Saradzhev, with Prokofiev at the piano.

🎼 114 years later, the First Piano Concerto remains one of Prokofiev's most exciting early works, a glimpse of the composer he was destined to become.

Franz Liszt passed away on this day 140 years ago.

Antonio Vivaldi passed away on this day 285 years ago.

Born on March 4, 1678, and passing on July 28, 1741, Vivaldi lived to the age of 63, leaving behind one of the most celebrated legacies in the history of music.

Known as The Red Priest for his distinctive red hair and his ordination as a Catholic priest, Vivaldi composed more than 500 concertos, including his most famous work, The Four Seasons, which remains one of the most beloved and frequently performed compositions in the classical repertoire.

Johann Sebastian Bach passed away on this day 276 years ago.

Born on March 31, 1685, and passing on July 28, 1750, Bach lived to the age of 65, leaving behind one of the most influential legacies in the history of music.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, Bach viewed his musical gifts as an act of worship, often dedicating his works Soli Deo Gloria (“To God alone be the glory”). His mastery of counterpoint, harmony, and form became the foundation upon which generations of composers built. Without Bach, the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and countless others would likely have taken a very different path.

Nearly three centuries after his death, his music continues to inspire performers, composers, and audiences around the world.
