Squishy PSA!

We have seen multiple vendors selling fake NeeDohs at community events this summer. They buy counterfeits direct-from-China for a dollar, and resell them for $10-$15.

As well as being a rip-off, bootleg squishies can be dangerous. NeeDohs and other toys have to undergo strict safety testing before they can be sold by retailers. If you buy a counterfeit, there's no way to know what's in it. Last month, the UK started cracking down and testing counterfeit squishies. They found that many contained high levels of benzene and other known carcinogens.

How can you spot a fake? For starters, Schylling (the NeeDoh company) does not make a Sprite, Dr. Pepper, or Nike NeeDoh. If a booth is selling these, chances are everything else they're selling hasn't been safety tested.

Otherwise, it's hard to tell. This current wave of counterfeits uses packaging that looks nearly identical to Schylling's. The only telltale sign I know of is that fake NeeDohs are often covered in plastic wrap within the box.

We recommend you only buy NeeDohs (or any toys) from legitimate retailers. We order all of our squishies from US-based toy companies that submit their products for required safety testing.
