Ruby zoisite, also known as anyolite, is one of nature’s more unusual combinations. It brings together red-to-purple ruby, green zoisite and, quite often, patches of black hornblende—all growing together in the same rock.
Most of the material on the market comes from Tanzania, where it formed as heat, pressure and mineral-rich fluids changed the surrounding rock. Ruby is a variety of corundum and one of the hardest minerals on Earth. Zoisite is considerably softer. Chromium helps produce both the ruby’s red color and the beautiful green of the zoisite.
One fun way to examine it is with a long-wave UV light. The ruby will often glow a brilliant red while the zoisite remains dark. Not every natural ruby fluoresces strongly, so this is a good clue—not absolute proof.
The real material should have irregular patches, natural color variation and ruby that looks like it grew inside the green stone. Be suspicious of neon colors, dye gathered in cracks, glue lines, bubbles or anything that looks painted. A damp white cloth pressed gently against an inconspicuous spot can also reveal obvious dye, although a little natural mineral dust may transfer too.
Metaphysically, ruby is associated with courage, vitality, passion and motivation, while zoisite is connected with growth, healing and transformation. Together, they are believed to help get stagnant energy moving again and turn good intentions into action.
