We are all people who need to love.

🧼The Power of the Towel 🧼

It forces us to ask ourselves:
Would you want to wash someone's dirty feet?
Let alone a room full of many people?

It is a filthy, grueling job.

Today, we have incredible Norwex products that make things a lot easier to clean, but back then, there were no shortcuts.

And the truth is, our souls are the hardest things to clean at times—our thoughts, our messy emotions, and our stubborn wills.

Yet Jesus, fully knowing exactly who He was and what His ultimate purpose was, willingly stepped into that void.

He didn’t just perform a nice ritual; He assumed the status of the lowest slave, shattered their pride without saying a word, and showed us that true love begins with a willingness to serve the messy parts of others. 🧼

🚶‍♂️ THE CULTURAL SHOCK OF THE TOWEL:
What Really Happened in the Upper Room

To truly understand why Jesus washing the disciples' feet was so shocking, you have to look at the first-century culture. 🦶🦶🦶

In ancient Israel, people wore open sandals on unpaved roads covered in dust and animal waste, and because they reclined on floor cushions to eat, dirty feet were positioned right next to other guests' faces and food. 😬

Social etiquette strictly required foot washing, but it was considered the lowest, filthiest task imaginable—so degrading that it was reserved only for non-Jewish slaves, and Jewish masters weren't even legally allowed to force a Jewish servant to do it.

Because the Upper Room was a borrowed space with no servants, the water basin and towel sat untouched at the door.

As recorded in Luke 22:24, the disciples openly fell into a dispute over which of them was considered the greatest. Because they were so busy fighting for status and titles, nobody wanted the "slave job," meaning they all sat down to a holy meal with completely filthy feet.

By stepping into that void, Jesus didn’t just perform a nice ritual—He willingly assumed the status of the lowest-ranking slave in the house, shattering their pride without saying a single word. 🧼

😮 THE ULTIMATE TEST OF LEADERSHIP and LOVE
Washing the Feet of Your Judas

It’s easy to serve people who support you, but what do you do when you know someone is actively working against you?

In his Maxwell Leadership Bible, John C. Maxwell highlights a staggering detail in John 13.

Jesus knew exactly what Judas was plotting before the foot washing even started.

Yet, He didn't skip Judas's spot at the table.
He didn't rush the job or show anger;
He gave His betrayer the exact same meticulous care, dignity, and service as His most loyal disciples.

Maxwell notes that while insecure leaders use service as a reward for loyalty, secure leaders serve out of their own character, not the recipient's worthiness.

By washing Judas's feet, Jesus showed that true servant leadership is driven by unconditional love and unwavering purpose, extending a final gesture of grace right up until the very end.

After thinking this over, does it change how and what we think next time we use a towel? 🧼
