Chameleon TLM vs Asunta 5 TLM

I'm beyond suprise how good the taste is & how beautiful the dual tones look from these 2 varieties!!

Chameleon
- Dual tone flesh: white in center, bright fuschia on the outer part.
- Taste like melon & berry mix, slight tartness blending in with sweetness. Very juicy. Taste pretty exotic.

Asunta 5
- Dual tone flesh: bright fuschia in center, dark red toward outside.
- Very smooth texture, kind of like white sapote mix with cantaloupe. No tartness, therefore it brings the sweet taste up a level. More frequent epsom salt, plus maturity will definitely improve its sweetness. This one tastes even more exotic than the Chameleon & very juicy too. A definite keeper!!

My Chameleon is about to change the color. Same goes with Tricia. It's a great feeling to see the transition in their colors after 30-35 days. For best taste, I usually pick between the 10th-15th day after it turns color. And last but not least, don't forget to place it in the friz for half a day prior to eating. The best!! 👍👍

Orejona vs Tricia

Each year the sweetness is increased by 1 level. Orejona was only 17.9 last year. It is 19.0 this year 2022. Beautiful Tricia starts out 1st fruit at 20.3, not bad!!

TRICIA
She is so beautiful !! The yellow & deep magenta/fuschia sepals popped out at night as a base to cover the pure white petals. Fruits are enlarging everyday & still in developing stage. It's about 30 days so far. Lost a dozen buds due to moving last month but nearly 10 new buds on the way coming out.

TIP #8 - COLLECT & STORE DF POLLEN

It's that time of the year when the first wave of DF flowers begin to bloom. Some varieties are self pollinating, meaning the stigma is short enough to touch the anthers so you dont have to worry about hand pollinating. But some have a long stigma that need a little help to develop fruit, or in some cases, require cross pollinating (self-sterile variety) from another variety to increase the chance for fruit setting & size.

Best time to collect pollen is around 8-10pm

Use any non-stick aluminum bowl & large enough to cover the diameter of the flower.

A soft nylon non-stick fan brush is used to collect pollen. A smaller fluffy brush (the type that can stick the makeup powder) is used for hand pollinating (see photos)

Once collecting is done, put small portion of pollen into each small ziplok bags, label it, seak it, throw them in a larger ziplok bags, add a few moisture absorbed bags inside to keep it dry at its max & seal it. Store it in the fridge & good to use for a whole month. I normally run out of it in less than a month & I never save it in the freezer to use for next year.

Note:
*Each time when I take a small bag out to use, I only use once or twice once opened. Throw the remaining pollen away if there is any left.
*Small bags in a larger bag will reduce moisture developing inside the smaller bags. Moisture absorbed packs inside the large bag will keep the inside even drier.
*There are many ways to collect pollen. It depends on what you have available & your creativity. This works fine for me so I've been using it for years.

TIP #7 - Benefit Of High POTASSIUM (K) Fertilizer In Winter

It is already mid October, folk!!
We are about to end the growing & fruiting season & begin to enter the dormant months. In Summer, we water DF plants more often, like 2-3 times a week. In Winter, watering should be much less, once per week or once per 10 days. Too frequent watering will lead to several issues like root rot, orange dots & fungal growth on stems, etc.

What about fertilizing in Winter?
In general, we also cut down fertilizing dosage in half, or even more so. Normally, a high Potassium (K) fertilizer would be used & very beneficial to DF plants during this time. I am using red granular 0-0-60 product.

Potassium is a naturally occurring mineral created during the evaporation of the ancient seabed. It is one of the 3 primary nutrients N-P-K required for plant growth. Potash is a water-soluble granular which contains 60% K2O. The product can be in red or white color.

This is the time when DF plants & other plants in general going into resting period. A low temperature & less day light condition weather cause the plant bio-clock to "think" this way. This is when K fertilizer comes in to give the root system a boost to help it sustain through the harsh Winter.

If we continue to feed more Nitrogen (N) in Fall or Winter, the plants will force itself to grow. With a lack of light & not fully complete photosynthesis process, the plant will grow weak. Unlike other plants, DF continues its photosynthesis process throughout the evening, but the stems may get softened, mushy, small & prone to diseases & fungal attacks. Brown or orange spots can easily be seen in some varieties, especially the hybridized ones due to its genetic mutation change within the plant DNA. Phosphorus (P) does not help much during this time either. It may only contribute a little micro nutrient supplement to the plants & that is all.

A few benefits that I found in high K fertilizer are:
1. Helps transferring water & sugar content inside the plant easily. This makes the fruits become sweeter & juicier. It also improves the life of flowers.
2. Helps strengthening the root system & plant cell walls during cold weather. It will produce a strong growth in stem cell wall within a short time & makes it less susceptible to diseases & rot.
3. Helps fighting back diseases prone to attack the plant during cold months. Thickening cell walls will make it difficult for fungal spores to germinate on new stem wall & cause diseases.

This short article only focuses on DF plants, but this concept can still be applied to other plants & vegetation in general. I start using this high K ratio (0-0-60) twice a month, or every 2 month, depend on dosage use. It is a recommended supplemental fertilizer to use around mid late September until late February, or until temperature reaches above 70 F.

Disclaimer: plants react differently due to plant maturity, different zones, humidity, dosage use, how often to apply, etc. Follow the instruction, observe & adjust accordingly.

Happy gardening!
