𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻’ 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 | 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘆

The work invites a viewer to consider the lenses they look through in life. Do you want to change the world or will you accommodate the world by changing yourself, it’s as easy as putting on eyeglasses. Britt challenges, cajoles, and commiserates with the viewer by offering a series of macroscopic, mostly transparent, mixed media paintings and sculptures. “Do you see what I see?”

Britt Humphrey is an artist and counselor. Her work is conceptual, multimedia, and (hopefully) thought provoking. Irreverence, metaphor, and aesthetics are her avenues of approach to viewer provocation. Britt graduated with a Master’s of Fine Arts in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2019 and has been a Licensed Counselor since 2003. Her pieces deliver the blunt and unsayable messages absent in a therapeutic context. She strongly believes agency in our own mind transforms experience. Through use of tacit knowledge, high context humor, and a twist on fine art expectations the viewer is invited to look closely, think deeply and make their own meaning and discourse. 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘂𝗺 | 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿

Hyperchromatic Interstitium is a celebration of the uncertain in a playground of texture and color. Through textile based forms, corporeal forms emerge as objects of fascination and contemplation, calling out for connection. These objects are a reminder of the precious hidden layers that can emerge with curiosity and the willingness to change.

Sarah Dexter is a fashion designer and multimedia artist based in Fairbanks, Alaska. After spending over a decade working in the medical field as an MRI technologist Sarah changed course to pursue her interest in fashion design. She graduated as the Valedictorian of the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, in 2021 with a BFA in Fashion Design. Upon returning to her hometown, Sarah began creating small-batch collections with a strong commitment to ethically made slow fashion. Sarah recently graduated with an MFA from the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she is expanded her artistic mediums. Through explorations in fiber arts and soft sculpture, Sarah examines growth as an unruly process of joy and damage, enacted through deconstructed corporeal forms. Sarah’s work has been recognized by such honors as the “Golden Shears Award” from Omaha Fashion Week and “Designer of the Year” from Alaska Fashion Week.

Each first Friday, we hold an opening reception for a different local ceramic artist, featuring a free community throw and light refreshments! Our front gallery has a treasure trove of pottery and ceramic art that our studio members lovingly handcraft. From plates, mugs, and bowls to jewelry and sculpture, our gallery has it all!

In celebration of Pride Month, the studio will feature several q***r voices in the gallery in lieu of an individual artist. Several months ago, we called on our LGBTQIA2S+ member artists to add their perspectives to this show, and that is exactly what they have done. A portion of proceeds from this show goes to Choosing Our Roots, a local non-profit dedicated to ensuring all LGBTQ+ Alaskan youth and young adults have access to safe homes, supportive communities, and opportunities to thrive.

This First Friday, we’re incredibly excited to introduce SuprSketch at AK Art Collective.

This isn’t just an art show. It’s a 30-day living art installation where the artwork literally evolves every single day. Artist Aaron Cox will be creating live paintings while original music is composed and performed live alongside the process. Every visit is different. Every day tells a new story.

What makes this even more exciting is that SuprSketch is an Alaska startup, built right here by local entrepreneur Aaron Cox. We couldn’t think of a better place for its debut than AK Art Collective.
