Fishing, picnic, bread, clothes … baskets
Basket making is one of the oldest crafts spanning 12,000 years. The exact place of origin is impossible to pinpoint. The oldest physical basket discovery was in the Fayoum Oasis region of Egypt and the Great Basin of North America. Baskets were made first for survival, they were essential for gathering now they are highly collectible fine art & folk crafts.
Some of my favorite ones are the vtg picnic baskets. Oh the memories flood in of family gatherings , picnics, days at the lake, and all the beautiful picnic baskets. Hawkeye Burlington & Redmond are just two of the makers of picnic baskets that were popular during the mid century modern era. All picnic baskets were not all made the same some were like suitcases.
There are many different types of baskets and styles. A few more of my favorites are Longabergers, Butt Baskets, & pack baskets. Heck I just like them all. You can store things In them, make arrangements in them, hang on the wall , sit on a table or the floor and throw a vtg quilt in one. It’s a nice homey farmhouse touch. The majority of antique baskets are made from splint oak of ash. They can be pricy and they are very sought after so if you find one within your “ thrift budget “ take it home with you. You could take a class on basket making.
