On September 9, 2026, officers with the Anderson Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at a business in the 2000 block of Mounds Road. During the incident, the store clerk was assaulted, and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the register before the suspect fled the area.

As the investigation continued, detectives with the Anderson Police Department Criminal Investigations Division identified the alleged suspect as Canasius Evans, 37, of Anderson.

On September 10, 2026, patrol units located Evans at a local hotel in the 500 block of Broadway Street, where he was taken into custody without incident.

The Anderson Police Department recognizes the diligent work of both the investigators and patrol units assigned to this case. Their efforts were instrumental in identifying and locating the alleged suspect and in advancing the investigation

All criminal charges and supporting investigative materials have been submitted to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office for review and prosecution, and any further inquiries regarding this case should be directed there.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law

On September 9, 2026, at approximately 10:52 p.m., officers with the Anderson Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at a business in the 2000 block of Mounds Road.

Preliminary information indicates that the store clerk was assaulted by an unknown black male suspect, who then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register before fleeing the area on foot.

Responding officers rendered aid to the victim and established a perimeter in an attempt to locate the suspect. Detectives with the Anderson Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

No arrests have been made, and detectives continue to follow up on all available leads. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The suspect is described as a black male who was wearing a Notre Dame long-sleeve shirt, black shorts, black socks, white tennis shoes, and a black stocking cap

On September 6, 2026, at approximately 1:54 a.m., officers with the
Anderson Police Department responded to the 1600 block of Madison Avenue after hearing multiple gunshots and receiving a report of a person who had been shot. Officers located Tomerious Smoots, 31, of Anderson, suffering from a gunshot wound to the
chest. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

As the investigation continued, detectives identified an alleged suspect connected to the case. On September 8, 2026, officers with the Fishers Police Department assisted investigators by conducting a traffic stop in Hamilton County. The alleged suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The Anderson Police Department SWAT Team, with assistance from additional law enforcement agencies, assisted investigators in executing search warrants at two separate residences in the 1800 block of Sheridan Street and the 2400 block of West 16th Street. All occupants were safely removed from the residences without incident.

The alleged suspect was criminally charged and remanded to the Madison County Jail. The criminal charges and probable cause affidavit were submitted to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office for review, and the suspect was placed on a 72-hour hold pending
that review. Detectives continue to investigate the incident and follow up on all available leads.

On September 8, 2026, at approximately 2:08 a.m., officers with the Anderson Police Department responded to a residence in the 5100 block of Southview Drive in reference to an unresponsive adult female located in a residential swimming pool.

Upon arrival, officers and emergency medical personnel located the female deceased.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and will determine the official cause and manner
of death following an autopsy.

As with all death investigations, the case will be forwarded for review. There are no ndications of foul play, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
