Meet Dr. Bob.

A native Hoosier, Dr. Bob Begley, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Broad Ripple, a city neighborhood in Indianapolis.

Dr. Bob started as a Pre-Veterinary Student at Michigan state university. After witnessing a particularly difficult delivery of a calf, he decided to change from animals to humans. Dr. Bob transferred to IU as a mathematics major (he enjoyed the discipline of problem-solving) and pre-med. Dr. Bob went on to the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he worked his way through with a job in the research department of Dow Chemical Co. He worked and went to school full time, graduating in 1962, with four children in tow.

From 1962 to ’63, Dr. Bob interned at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

In a time when many of his peers were specializing, he went into family practice. After his internship, he became a family Doc in the Madison County Indiana village of Pendleton. His first five years were centered in Pendleton, then, to be near the hospital, he relocated to the nearby county seat of Anderson. When Dr. Bob began his practice, he averaged 10 house calls a night. As with house calls, many things changed over his long career, however, one thing that never changed, patients always expected a lot of him. Medicine was advantageous for Dr. Bob, he ever considered it a vocation, never just a job.
