SULPHER 22 22 Spring 1988 featuring: A TRIBUTE TO ANA MENDIETA. [Peter Schjeldahl Library]. Clayton Eshelman, Rachel Blau Duplessis, Charles Bernstein, John Yau, et al (eds.) Softcover, 247 pages (+ ads) in VG minus condition, thus: from the collection of the late art critic Peter Schjeldahl, this book survived the 2019 fire at his St. Mark’s Place flat & was subsequently boxed with books that must have been damp as it retains a slightly musty scent. Otherwise, just some age-toning to pages and a bit of a curl to front cover. Additional contributions from Linda Montano, Lucy Lippard, Nancy Spero, Mira Schor & Carolee Schneemann (on Mendieta) as well as other work by Gary Snyder, Susan Howe, Bruce Andrews, Amiri Baraka, Robert Duncan and more. Scarce journal with cover photo of the great Ana Mendieta by Dawoud Bey. $75 shipped.

Somewhere in a box in the bowels of my basement is a 90 minute cassette of highlights from the 1984 New Year’s Day Marathon at The Poetry Project at Saint Marks Church-In-The-Bowery. Among the scores of poems read that day and night, which also included this bookseller reading a frighteningly juvenile piece, the highlight was certainly performing . (It was also the night I first met Allen Ginsberg.) I haven’t been able to find the tape, and the Poetry Project Archives has yet to upload the recording of that marathon, but someday I’ll find it. I’ve since heard several recordings of Waldman doing the poem but the one I was there for is still iconic. Anne, I hope you’re ok with my rendition.
