⚖️ This principle is vital because it protects us from our normal inclination to think the worst of people and condemn them based only on an accusation.

Think about it. How often do we naturally assume that what we hear in the news about the latest actor or professional athlete accused of a crime must be true?! But sometimes it’s not.

Or if a colleague gives you some dirt about another colleague and you automatically assume it’s accurate. But oftentimes it’s not.

A claim or allegation made about someone in the legal system is made by someone else who is expressing an opinion or reasoned conclusion. But that doesn’t make that person infallible. Because sometimes they are mistaken, either through neglect or error or carelessness or malice.

Either way, the presumption of innocence helps protect against wrongful convictions of innocent people. Isn’t that important enough reason to uphold its value in everyday life?!

I think it is. And it’s helpful to apply this principle daily in our relationships, families, workplaces, politics and elsewhere because it protects us from our seemingly natural inclination to condemn others so we feel better about ourselves.

It’s a powerful legal principle and rule for life!

The small risk in a well functioning justice system is that some guilty people go free.

But isn’t that better than one innocent person being wrongfully imprisoned?!

But that could never happen to me, you say!

But it could, and does happen to all sorts of good people who thought it could never happen to them. That’s the point!

Now imagine you are that innocent person who is wrongfully imprisoned.

How do you feel about this simple truth now??? ⚖️
