On the road today! 🛻

We’re off to the Kastel Show Cattle Sale in Hudson, Michigan.

David is selling four cattle he raised right here on the farm this year! 💫 I am so excited to be on the sidelines watching him do what he loves.

Now, do I know anything about show cattle?
Nope. 😂🤷‍♀️

But I do know what it means to watch your kid find something he loves, work hard at it, and live in the moment. So I’ll be on the sidelines with a very full heart, watching David and the others in cattle share their passion.

Factoid Friday 📕

We grew just shy of 3,000 mums this season.🙃
Here’s a little peek behind the scenes.

My team spends hours preparing, planting, watering, feeding, grooming, and getting Mum Land ready for fall.

The HillTop team plants the mums by hand with care. Every drip line is placed just so. From there, they live their well-cared-for lives on our computerized drip irrigation system until they find their new home.

To ensure the proper bloom time, the mums must be planted by the end of June. We grow three bloom stages:

•Early blooming — September
• Mid-blooming — mid-September
•Late blooming — October

We let them respond naturally to the shortening daylight hours of late summer. There are tricks to getting an earlier bloom-some larger growers use what’s called black cloth to artificially shorten daylight hours and bring blooms as early as August. These mums will typically go to the ‘big stores’.

•Just a reminder, we have extended fall hours:

🍂 Monday–Friday: 9–6
🍂 Saturday: 9–5
🍂 Sunday: 10–5

When you are ready, we also offer fall pansies, decorative kale, corn shocks, and pumpkins to help get your porch ready for the season. 🎃🍁

It was mid-August. It was hot or raining, and there seemed to be no in-between.

Through photographs and paintings, we are always grateful for those who take the time to capture a moment. Slowly, farm landscapes are disappearing.

So when an artist reaches out and says they’d like to capture a piece of our farm, my answer is enthusiastically YES!

I was a little late to the draw when it came to purchasing this beautiful painting. Next time. 😉

Someone else was lucky enough to take it home and hang it on their wall. To that individual, may you treasure it.💛🚜

You certainly have been keeping me running the last few days! Once the weather broke, you definitely remembered us, THANK YOU! 🥰

I’ve been running back and forth between keeping the Farm Shed stocked and spending time with all of you in Mum Land.🏃

The Farm Shed has been restocked again this evening with:
•Romaine
•Spinach
• Lettuce
•Tomatoes
•Eggs
Plus all of our other staples.🙃

Golden hour on the mums really is magical. Thank you for an amazing week. 🌱
