“Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead!” These immortal words are attributed to Rear Adm. David G. Farragut as his flagship, the sloop-of-war USS Hartford, led a Union squadron into Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. The Confederate “torpedoes” Farragut faced were not modern torpedoes, but naval mines laid beneath the water. His victory at Mobile Bay helped close one of the Confederacy’s last major ports.

On August 3, 1958, the nuclear-powered submarine USS Nautilus, commanded by Cmdr. William R. Anderson, USN (USNA Class of 1942), became the first warship to reach the North Pole while submerged.

Probably the single most consequential event leading to full U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War was the Gulf of Tonkin incident. On August 2, 1964, the destroyer USS Maddox, commanded by Cmdr. Herbert L. Ogier, USN (USNA Class of 1944), was engaged by North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats while operating in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of North Vietnam. The incident, and reports of a second attack two days later, prompted passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which significantly expanded U.S. military involvement in Vietnam.

On July 30, 1945, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea. The U.S. Navy had suffered numerous tragedies in its history, but this was among the worst. Of the nearly 1,200 men aboard, only 316 survived. The tragedy was compounded by what followed. Just days earlier, Indianapolis had delivered key components of the atomic bomb that would be dropped on Hiroshima. After the sinking, the ship's commanding officer, Captain Charles B. McVay III (class of 1920), despite an outstanding wartime record, was court-martialed and never again held command at sea.
