One of Benjamin Franklin's greatest contributions as the American envoy to France was securing the French merchant ship that John Paul Jones transformed into the USS Bonhomme Richard, named in honor of Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack.
🫑
That ship became the setting for one of the most famous naval battles in history. On September 23, 1779, during a fierce engagement with HMS Serapis, the British captain asked Jones if he had struck his colors. Jones defiantly replied, "I have not yet begun to fight!" He went on to win the battle, cementing his place as one of the greatest heroes in American naval history.

On September 22, 1944, aircraft from Task Force 38, part of the U.S. Third Fleet commanded by Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey (Class of 1904), launched devastating strikes against Japanese warships near Luzon. The attacks destroyed numerous enemy vessels and helped pave the way for the Allied liberation of the Philippines.

On September 20, 1975, the destroyer USS Spruance was commissioned. As the lead ship of its class, it was the first U.S. Navy destroyer powered entirely by gas turbine engines, a revolutionary propulsion system that provided greater speed, reliability, and easier maintenance than traditional steam-powered ships. The success of the Spruance class paved the way for future surface combatants, including the Ticonderoga-class cruisers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

As the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps advanced relentlessly across the Pacific during World War II, carrier task forces became the backbone of American naval power. Centered on an aircraft carrier and screened by destroyers, cruisers, and other warships, these formations projected air power across vast distances. On September 18, 1943, Task Force 15, commanded by Rear Admiral Charles A. Pownall, USNA Class of 1910, launched attacks against the Gilbert Islands, paving the way for the Central Pacific offensive.

The historic Inchon Landing during the Korean War was one of General Douglas MacArthur's boldest strategic achievements. But turning that vision into reality required extraordinary naval leadership. On September 15, 1950, sailors and Marines, under the command of Rear Admiral James H. Doyle (Class of 1920) carried out the daring amphibious assault that seized Inchon and changed the course of the war.

Today is VJ Day!
βš“ πŸŽ–οΈ

On September 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, representatives of the Empire of Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender, bringing World War II to an official end. It was fitting that Admiral Chester W. Nimitz(Class of 1905) signed on behalf of the United States.
As Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, Nimitz had led the naval campaign that helped secure Allied victory in the Pacific.
