Knitting and crocheting can really cause nutritional and health deficits …. not because yarn has anything intrinsically wrong with it, but because knitting and crocheting are SO AWESOME AND FUN AND ADDICTING that we literally can’t stop doing it not even for water or Vitamin D

Pattern Prophecies is back… but this time we’re shopping for children we do not have. 😂🧶
We cracked open MODE Mini Knits: Kids Casuals by Rowan, featuring 13 scaled-down versions of some of MODE’s most-loved designs for kids ages 3–12. Naturally, this led to one very important question: are we actually knitting for an imaginary child… or are we just figuring out how to size these up for ourselves?
Our psychic abilities were questionable this round, but the patterns? Extremely cute. Tiny sweaters, cardigans, accessories, beautiful textures — and apparently enough temptation to make us reconsider whether we’re “vest people.”

Every knitter has a story. Ann’s begins at seven years old, learning alongside her sister and cousin from her grandmother.
More than 60 years later, she still has the afghan her grandmother made for her, remembers the very first yarn shop that changed how she thought about knitting, and can tell you exactly why every handmade gift carries something more than just stitches.
One of our favorite moments is when she describes a wedding blanket she made for her son and daughter-in-law. She estimated there were hundreds of thousands of stitches in it, and wrote them a note that said:
“Every single one of them was knit with love.” ❤️
It’s a beautiful reminder that handmade gifts aren’t valuable because of the yarn or the pattern—they’re valuable because someone chose to spend their time making something just for you.

🔮 PATTERN PROPHECIES: Rowan Magazine No. 79 🔮
Yes, fall is creeping closer. No, that will not stop us from appreciating an excellent Spring/Summer Rowan magazine. 🧶
This round, we’re predicting patterns for Madelyn, Taylor, and ourselves from Rowan Magazine No. 79—and figuring out which yarns from the shop we’d use to make them.
There are a LOT of good ones in this issue, from the Marigold Cardigan to delicate lace details, classic silhouettes, and enough potential Camper color combinations to keep us occupied for an unreasonable amount of time.
And we have to give Rowan some extra credit for something we don’t see nearly enough of: great unisex and menswear patterns. The nautical section has several designs shown on both men and women, and in a knitting world where men’s patterns can sometimes feel like a bit of a desert, we love seeing classic pieces that work for everybody.
Did we predict each other’s patterns correctly? Mostly. Were there a few surprises? Absolutely.

We went through all 18 patterns in Knitted Kalevala by Jenna Kostet and did the very serious, highly scientific work of deciding which design belongs to each sign of the zodiac. 🔮🧶

Knitted Kalevala is inspired by the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic: a collection of old poetry filled with Baltic-Finnic mythology, ancient symbols, nature and mythical creatures. Jenna Kostet translates that world into 18 beautiful knitting patterns, with Finnish, Scandinavian and Baltic influences woven throughout the colorwork.
Inside you’ll find 12 sweaters, 2 cardigans, 2 pairs of socks, mittens and a hat, ranging from delicate motifs to dramatic statement knits. And despite how intricate some of them look, the colorwork uses only two colors at a time!

We found her. The woman from the study.
Ann is 69, has been knitting since she was about seven, and after more than 60 years of experience, she has developed some knitting opinions.
She likes complicated patterns. She likes cables, colorwork and bobbles. She thinks endless stockinette is boring. She likes to purl. She loves to seam. She thinks seamed garments fit better. And she has literally fallen asleep knitting stockinette in the round.
In other words, after three days of extremely rigorous investigation, our findings remain unchanged.
But beneath Ann’s knitting hot takes is something we really love: after all these years, she still wants knitting to challenge her. She wants to learn something new, make something complicated, and occasionally force herself to practice a little patience.
And after more than six decades of knitting, she still considers it a friend: “You’re never really alone when you have your knitting.” ❤️
Now that our investigation is complete, we need to know: Team Purling? Or Anti-Purling?

🚨 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: YOU MIGHT NOT ACTUALLY HATE SEAMING. 🚨

Madelyn has a theory: a lot of knitters who say they hate seaming… have never actually seamed a sweater.
And thus begins our campaign to bring back knitting garments in pieces. 🫡

Seaming is not that hard. Watching two pieces of knitting magically cinch together is deeply satisfying. Your projects stay more portable. Mistakes are contained to individual pieces. And those seams actually add structure to your finished garment.

Does Madelyn have some grouchy young-lady opinions about the disappearance of seamed sweaters? Absolutely.
Will she still happily help you with your top-down yoke sweater? Of course.
Will she judge you?
Not to your face. ❤️
All we ask is that you give seaming a chance.
Stay tuned. We have reason to believe further evidence supporting Madelyn’s position may emerge this week.
