We’ve been open about nine weeks, which means we’re in our third month. Patterns are starting to emerge in running this bookstore that are different from any of our previous bookshops. Customer and patron choices are different, meaning that this is not Bethesda, Columbia or Glen Burnie for that matter, Annapolis Maryland has its own unique spin on life and reading habits. Recognizing and learning our new found community’s choices is an opportunity to expand our ideas of what it means to be a bookseller.

I am, with the help of staff and family reorganizing / rearranging books and shelving. We’re expanding the children's, literature, fiction and history sections. Many books need to be replaced as they walk out the door, but the shelves need to be refreshed with new material to satisfy individuals' next great read or unique book to ponder upon.

Venice, known for canals and a hub of pre-renaissance trade and knowledge invented Double Entry bookkeeping to keep balance sheets for all of their activities. We’re going to have to develop our own form of bookkeeping based not on a spreadsheet of sales but on the wants and desires of our community. Yes, that means I need a uniquely curmudgeon way of ordering and inventory.

I prattle on too long about our process. However it is that very process, plus the adding of new and interesting material that keeps Curmudgeon Books fresh and I hopefully appealing to all of our new found friends and patrons.

A care package came in from Macmillan Publisher today. It brought with it: Sarah Maas, Clive Barker, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, a young adult version of The Odyssey, and some Herman Hesse, plus the Fourth Wing series by Rebecca Yarros.

We’ve also recently received the “It” by Steven King with a new cover and painted page edges. We placed it with the “It” coloring book and the novel Christine and Doctor Sleep.

Speaking of new arrivals a new to us classics publisher Wordsworth sent us our first shipment. Including: Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Aesop’s Fables, paperback version of The Odyssey and The Iliad, Pride and Prejudice, The Little Prince, Sense & Sensibility, the Essential Kafka, Marx -Das Capital, Clausewitz On War, and a host of others.

I’ve never looked forward to the mail so much!

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Thomas Merton

Yes sometimes I get bookstore envy, when another shop might have or do this or that better than the old Curmudgeon. Such as the now closed but wonderful Deadalus Books of Columbia Maryland. They had an enriching Art section, that was worthy of any museum shop. We will keep trying to develop the Curmudgeon to meet the needs of our community.

In that spirit at seven weeks I’m rearranging furniture again and have built a display wall in the back of our shop. It’s featuring our Art selection to begin with but it will change with the seasons to feature a wide range of product.

Hope you’re enjoying your summer.

If we can be of help we’re in Annapolis Mall back near the upcoming Tesla Dealership and the Blue Garage.

My son and I, took an hour and rummaged through the storage unit and dug out a shelving unit to better display our children’s books.

Putting it together was no small matter either. It became a real father and son project for the evening. Couldn’t bring the parts into the store until after the mall closed and then it was bigger than we anticipated. Let’s just say it’s been a day, evening.

However the store, regardless of being named the “Curmudgeon” is really becoming a destination for children’s books.

We now carry a broad range of Board Books, and an assortment of over 200 titles of getting ready to read books. Dr. Seuss books, Disney titles, Rick Riordan, Dog Man, Wimpy Kid, Wings of Fire, and many others. Oh I should also mention the copies of Maryland’s Chadwick the Crab and Misty the pony.

The young adult section is growing with Scholastic titles and we’re slowly expanding the manga section with new books and favorites like Hero Academia titles.

So maybe this old dog can learn some new tricks. Or maybe even a Curmudgeon can stock the stuff kids like and learn with.

Have a great summer and if you’re out this way stop in and say hi.

The very air is hard to watch these days. I’ve seen footage of the dust bowl sending brown air to New York and DC but this stuff this week is just sad.

We start buying or trading with patrons this Sunday from 12 noon to 5:00PM. We buy the same products you see in the store, quality books, records, DVDs, and Cds. As I’ve said in the past we don’t charge a lot, so we don’t pay a lot. What are we particularly looking for comics, manga, clean books, Cds, and records.

We are unable to buy previously owned stuffed animals, puzzles, and games.

The last six weeks have been amazing for us, having been so welcomed in Annapolis.

I will do my best to offer fair trade and funds for the materials we see. We’ll make mistakes so please be patient with me as this process begins.

We’re settling in to the Annapolis Mall store. People / patrons / guests everyday introduce themselves as those who remember us at our previous location. And we’re making new friends as well.

Today was box day, boxes and boxes of books came in from Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Source Books, Schiffer Publishing and others. They feel like presents as we open them up.

Chadwick the Crab got restocked, as well as Maryland board books, stuff animals and some Pokémon book. Disney books, Cat in the Hat titles as well as more Grinch. Classics like Poe, Winnie the Pooh, Fahrenheit 451, Cloudy with a chance of meat balls, and more.

We’re open and thank you to everyone who’s visited so far.

Rain or Shine,
Curmudgeon Books
is my kind of place.

What book changed
things for you?

Outside of the
bible, whose
words made
a difference
for you?

If you could recommend
just one read to a
friend, what would
you want them
to spend time with?

What should
I stock in this
community
bookshop?

I’ll go first:
JOB:
A comedy of justice
by Robert A. Heinlein

Or for business:
A Wack on the Side of the Head
by Roger von Oech

Beginning to read is such a special time. I remember one day I was busy and my daughter wanted me to read to her. I was the adult and working on something, I told her we'd read in a little bit. She wrestled her bear that was bigger than her to the ground, sat in its lap and started to read page after page to the bear. It broke my heart. Because my daughter was too young to read, she had memorized each page from our previous reading opportunities.

Don't be like me and be too busy

They will value what you value,
read to them.
