Mystic Plant Room

Mystic Plant Room Hey Appleton! I love the smell of the earth and watching things grow. This was my deep dive into plant parenthood again, as life was changing. It was amazing!

Your neighborhood plant shop with crystals, incense, stickers and LOCAL handmades.

425 W Wisconsin Ave #1
Parking lot and free street parking In the early 90's I took a job working in a garden center and then became a "plant lady" caring for business plants, where I gained basic plant care knowledge, about all kinds of plants. Fast forward 30 years, out of state moves, career and a

kid....Plants had become very therapeutic to many people during the pandemic and people were hooked. In 2021 I started selling my plant propagations at the local farmers market and on Facebook. People of all walks and ages would stop to talk plants. So after 10 years of selling my handmade wears, I decided it would be nice to incorporate my passions (plants, sewing, crochet, nature and the moon) into a brick & mortar shop. Today, my goal is to share this knowledge with customers.

What is Foliar Spray?
Foliar spraying is the practice of misting a diluted fertilizer or plant supplement directly onto a plant's leaves instead of applying it to the soil. Many nutrients can be absorbed through the leaf surface, giving plants a quick boost.
🌿
It doesn't replace regular watering or fertilizing through the roots—it's simply another tool that can complement a healthy plant care routine.
💧
Benefits of foliar spraying
🌿 Provides nutrients quickly because they're absorbed through the leaves.
🍃 Can encourage healthier foliage and stronger growth when used correctly.
✨ Helps plants recover after repotting, shipping, or other mild stress (once they're actively growing again).
🌱 Delivers nutrients even if the root system isn't absorbing efficiently.
💚 Great for products like kelp extracts, micronutrients, and some orchid fertilizers.

How to do it at home - It's very simple.
💫
Mix the product according to the label directions.
Pour it into a clean spray bottle.
Spray both the tops and undersides of the leaves until they're lightly coated—not dripping.
Spray in the morning or evening, avoiding sun or growlights being on.
Allow the leaves to dry naturally.
🌱
How often? - For most houseplants, every 2–4 weeks is plenty unless the product recommends otherwise. More isn't necessarily better.
🪴
What can you spray? - Many common houseplants respond well, including:
Pothos
Philodendrons
Monsteras
Hoyas
Orchids
Ferns
Carnivorous plants (only with products that are appropriate for them and at the correct dilution) minus Pings
🚫
A few cautions - Never spray plants sitting in direct, hot sunlight, as wet leaves can be more prone to damage.
Don't use stronger concentrations than recommended.
Skip spraying fuzzy or hairy leaves (such as many African violets), since they can hold moisture and develop spotting or rot.
If you're trying a new product, test it on one or two leaves first.
💚
I brought in some kelp fertilizer to foliar spray the venus fly traps and sundews. Comment "Kelp" and let me know if you'd try this method, or have already.

To some a plant is simply a plant. 🌱

But sometimes it's something more.

It's something living to care for.
Something to watch grow.
A little companionship in an otherwise quiet home.
A reason to slow down and be patient.
A bit of beauty and joy when life feels heavy.
And sometimes, it's a reminder that growth takes time and that a new chapter can begin.

That's where The Heartleaf Project comes in.

Heartleaf is a Community Giving Project here in the Fox Valley, created to connect people with plants, as a simple act of kindness, encouragement, companionship, and hope.

We're starting small and letting it grow organically, with the hope that a plant might find its way to someone who could truly benefit from having something living to nurture.

PLANT TIP TUESDAY - THRIPS

Let’s talk about the tiny pests that can make you want to throw the whole plant away. 😅

Thrips can be a real battle because they have multiple life stages. You may treat the plant today and kill the thrips you can see, but eggs can be tucked INSIDE plant tissue, and other stages can develop in the growing media. That’s why one treatment usually isn’t enough.

🫧 Treatment: Start by thoroughly washing the plant, paying close attention to the undersides of the leaves. Insecticidal soap can help with contact control, and products containing **spinosad**, such as Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew, are another option for treating thrips. Always follow the product label for application and repeat treatments.

🟦 Blue sticky traps can also help catch adult thrips and, just as importantly, help you monitor whether you still have activity.

🪴 For a heavier infestation, don't forget about the **growing media**. Some thrips stages leave the plant and develop in the soil, so treating only the leaves may leave you playing an endless game of whack-a-mole. 😂

✂️ Removing heavily damaged leaves can also help reduce the population and make treatment easier.

And here's the thing… BUGS HAPPEN.
You don't need to inspect every single leaf with a magnifying glass before a plant is allowed into your home. Plants are living things, and pests are unfortunately part of plant parenthood.

So if you've dealt with thrips before, you're definitely not alone. Keep treating, keep monitoring, and don't give up after the first round.

🍃 Plant Check-In | August Edition

☀️ As hard as it is to believe, I'm already starting to think about the transition into fall. There are still plenty of warm days ahead, but now is the perfect time to start planning for the season ahead.

🪴 If you've been putting off repotting, this is a great time to do it. Allowing your plant friends to settle in before growth begins to slow down.

✂️ Have a plant that's looking a little leggy? A light trim now can encourage fuller, healthier growth while there's still plenty of time left in the growing season.

💡 Start thinking about where your houseplants will spend the fall and winter. Check your grow lights, make room on your shelves, and decide which plants will need the brightest spots once the days get shorter.

🌿 If your plants spent the summer outdoors, begin planning to bring them back inside over the next several weeks. They can often stay outside until temperatures reach around 50°F, but I like to bring mine in a little earlier so I can inspect them, get them settled, and hopefully avoid bringing in any unwanted hitchhikers. I'm actually working on my own plant shelves and grow light setup right now!

💚 The seasonal change will be here before we know it. A little planning now can make the transition much easier for both you and your plants.

Did you know that dusty leaves can make it harder for your plants to do what they do best?

Over time, dust and debris build up on foliage, reducing the amount of light that reaches the leaf surface. Clean leaves can capture light more efficiently, helping your plants photosynthesize and stay healthy.

A few benefits of keeping your plant's leaves clean:
🌱 Helps maximize light absorption
🌱 Supports healthy growth
🌱 Makes it easier to spot pests before they become a problem
🌱 Keeps your plants looking their best

We also just brought in a new product we're excited about!

Leaf Radiance is made right here in Wisconsin by a women-owned company. It's formulated with ingredients like neem, rosemary and peppermint to gently clean and refresh your plant's foliage while leaving leaves looking vibrant. And you know what? Those 3 products also help with pests!

And if you're looking for something soft to wipe down your plants, we also carry handmade reusable plant cloths in the shop! Crocheted cotton washcloths, and cotton flannel cloths in fun botanical, celestial and mushroom prints. They're washable, reusable, and a great alternative to disposable paper towels while supporting a local maker.
