🧡Last week, we took some time to show appreciation for our incredible crews. We couldn’t operate without sufficient help. These people are the reason we are able to ship out multiple trucks of plants each day in the Spring & the reason we are building high tunnels every week throughout the year. We are so very grateful for each & every one of them. We are a tight-knit bunch around here- these folks aren’t just employees, they are our family. ❤️

Speaking of family, last week also marked the end of the season for our H-2A crew. They worked their last day & headed back home to Mexico to spend a few months with their families. We always hate to see them go, but it really warms our heart to see them so excited to go home to their families for a while. Can you imagine working that far away from your family? For several months at a time!? It is never lost on us how much they sacrifice to be here in America legally working through this program.

We joined the H2A program several years ago. We had reached a point in our business where we had to find dependable, qualified help or start downsizing our operation. We tried for years to fill all of our positions with American workers and while we are blessed with a large crew of them, we couldn’t ever fill the last 5-7 spots with people that would show up consistently, work in the heat, and pull the long hours & weekends. So we signed up for the H2A program. This program allows American farmers a legal pathway to bring in workers from other countries to fill seasonal jobs. They come & work their contract and they return home to their families until it starts again.

The first year we started, we had no idea what to expect. Full of nerves & excitement, we went & picked them up from the co-op & came home at midnight. They were at work ready to go the next morning at 7:30. And to be honest, they have showed up & worked so hard every single workday since then.

They became part of our team and almost immediately we realized that these men were more than what we ever expected. The four of them filled the work gap of those last 5-7 people we needed to hire. They volunteered to come in early, stay late, and work every weekend & holiday they could. They learned our way of doing things, took pride in their work, looked out for one another, and helped us accomplish things we simply couldn’t have done without them.

They changed the way we work. They changed what we are capable of producing. They helped us have the ability to grow our business in ways we had only hoped for. And somewhere along the way, they became much more than employees—they became a part of our family too.

We are incredibly grateful for every single one of our employees. Grateful for their hard work. For their commitment. And grateful for the sacrifices they make to come from home to work with us- whether they are coming from over the road or from a different country!

Week 2- ‘Tunnel Talk’

Let’s talk: PLASTIC.

The covering that gives the High-Tunnel structure its unique ability to protect your crops while also allowing an appropriate amount of sunlight through.

There are several kinds of plastic that are used in High-Tunnel & greenhouse production. There are different colors of plastic AND different thicknesses.

The two most commonly known & used colors are clear & white. In a very general sense, clear plastic typically allows more direct sunlight through, allowing your crops a more direct source of light and the house to heat quicker. White plastic offers a more diffused approach to sunlight transmission. We will dive deeper on this in another post. 🙂

Plastic also comes in several different thicknesses, which are measured in “mils”. This is a very important aspect to consider when shopping & comparing prices for your next film. Also keep in mind that a ‘mil’ is not the same thing as millimeter. That’s an easy one for customers to confuse. A 6-mil film is only about 0.15 mm thick.

The most commonly used thickness in our operation is a 6mil film. Puckett’s 6mil film is rated for 4 years!

Other popular thicknesses include 3 & 4 mil films. These films are generally purchased with the intention of using them for one season. This is why they are often referred to as “Over-Winter” films. Most growers are using them to cover their tunnel or overwintering structure for the winter season and once Spring arrives, they remove the cover. This practice is commonly seen in nursery production, where it is vital for many of their crops to experience a natural dormant season without direct exposure to extreme cold temps and rapid freeze/thaw cycles. Removing the cover after the weather breaks allows plants to gradually transition back to outdoor growing conditions, helping prepare them for sale and eventual ground-planting by the consumer.

🧡Fall Mum Crop update!!

We still have some really beautiful mums left. And thankfully, we have a lot that are still in a great stage for buyers- Loaded with buds that are just popping open! And “I want it that wayyyy”….😆

Featured in the video is our classic 10” pot size. One of our most popular sizes, our 10” mums are big enough to make a statement, but not overly large, like the 14”, allowing our wholesale buyers to be able to haul a decent load when they need them. And the best thing- they’re priced right in the middle and give you plenty of room for resale.

A successful Spring season starts LONG before the season gets here.
Did you know that some of our liners, bulbs, and even some of the growing supplies need to be booked almost a year in advance?!
During Covid & for a long time thereafter, the supply chain was chaos. We were scrambling to find a supply source for things that we would have typically had no problem at all ordering. Thankfully things have returned to “normal” for the most part, but now we are faced with the ever-changing situation with fuel prices, tariffs, and import delays. With these factors always being a possibility, we have learned to plan as far ahead as possible and always book our deliveries for several weeks before we know they HAVE to be here. This gives us a little cushion for delays and backorders.
If you are a fellow grower, you know that Fall Season= 2 things: Mums AND pre-books! 😆 Right NOW is when you have to be securing your supply orders, booking your soil, locking in any pricing that you are able to, and getting all of your ducks in a row. 🦆

📣Welcome to our new series: “Tunnel Talk”
where, each week, we will deep dive into some of the most frequently-asked questions & topics in the high-tunnel world.

This week’s topic: What exactly IS a high-tunnel?

According to the NRCS, “a High Tunnel System, commonly called a “hoop house,” is an increasingly popular conservation practice for farmers”. In short, it is a hoop-style frame covered with greenhouse plastic. By utilizing the plastic covering, high tunnel structures protect plants from severe weather and allow farmers to extend their growing seasons– earlier into the spring, later into the fall, and sometimes, year-round.

Being able to control your growing environment is just one of the many benefits. By preventing direct rainfall from reaching plants, farmers not only reduce their chances of disease, they can easily use tools like drip irrigation to deliver the desired level water and nutrients to plants. High tunnels also offer farmers a greater ability to control pests and can even protect plants from pollen and pesticide drift.

High-Tunnels are not a “one size fits all”. We offer two different frame options and countless combinations of equipment that you can utilize to make your growing experience the easiest & most efficient.
