Our featured artists this month in the gallery are Patricia Sennott, Amy Ellis Taylor and Michael Edwards.

Amy Ellis Taylor is a glass artist who began working exclusively in stained glass in 2007 when she became a craftsman for a local stained glass lighting studio. After a decade working with glass and learning from an amazing team of people, she decided to dedicate her time to creating original pieces for private clients out of her home studio. Amy’s subject matter is almost always inspired by the natural beauty of the California coast. She works in copper foil and lead techniques, often using both in the same piece. Amy doesn’t consider herself a fusing artist but does enjoy adding fused elements in her designs to add visual texture to her work.

Patricia Sennott is a multimedia artist, working in Monotype printmaking, Cyanotype (one of the oldest methods of photography) and watercolor painting. After graduating from Humboldt State University with an Art degree, Patricia made paintings on silk with French dyes, creating both wearable art and wall hangings. Later, her work transitioned from silk painting to traditional transparent watercolor, which she has enjoyed for many years. She later began to pursue the painterly form of printmaking called Monotype, taking workshops and classes to learn more about the medium. Currently Patricia continues to work in these various mediums, beautifully portraying her unique interpretations of subjects such as birds, bees and botanicals.

Michael Edwards Michael Edwards is a Jeweler who makes one-of-a-kind pieces using precious metals and gemstones. One of the founding members of the Artisan Gallery, Michael studied metalsmithing at Cabrillo College and received his BA in Art (jewelry/metals emphasis) at Humboldt State University. Michael utilizes both cast and fabrication techniques in his metal work. He enjoys his bench time, especially the careful consideration of process when designing an object. Serendipity almost always enters the process and provides a departure point for further exploration in his next work.

If you haven't been into the gallery yet this month to see our Featured Artists Show, this is your last week to do so. The fabulous work of Peggy Loudon and Anna Oneglia will be on display through August 9th. Gallery hours are M-Sat 10-6 and Sundays 12-4. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our featured artists this month at the Arcata Artisans Gallery are Anna Oneglia and Peggy Loudon.

Anna is a painter and printmaker whose imaginative and colorful paintings and prints are greatly influenced by her travel to places around the world. Most of her paintings begin as sketchbook drawings made out in the world where she collects images and ideas, bringing them back to the studio to use as starting points for the larger works on canvas. Anna is interested in color, movement, people, and the diversity and beauty of the world. Anna’s prints are primarily wood & linoleum blocks, made with multiple color blocks or by hand coloring a single printed block. The quote prints she makes are an ongoing series, adding words into the mix of imagery, and she make a few more of these each year!

Peggy is a potter who works primarily with porcelain to create elegant, one-of-a-kind vessel forms. By integrating form, proportion and texture, Peggy strives to create work that brings a sense of calm and beauty to the home; work that transcends time and will continue to have integrity throughout her lifetime and beyond. Peggy is drawn to the subtle qualities of both Asian and Scandinavian design and her traditional forms are individually hand thrown and high fired in a reduction atmosphere in her gas kiln. To stay fresh, Peggy challenges herself by experimenting with new clay bodies, firing techniques and surface treatments. After many years of throwing, trimming, glazing and firing pots, Peggy still find the process fascinating, stimulating and rewarding, and considers herself lucky and grateful every day.

Our featured artists this month at the Arcata Artisans Gallery are Joyce Jonte’ and Gilbert Castro.

Joyce is a painter and one of our founding members of the Arcata Artisans Gallery. Joyce moved to Arcata in 1974 to study art at HSU and graduated in 1979 with an emphasis in watercolor painting, representational drawing, and life drawing. In the ensuing decades, Joyce has continued to pursue a passionate study of watercolor technique and life drawing. The inspiring skill level that Joyce demonstrates in her work has been honed through years of drawing at the weekly figure drawing classes that she facilitates at the Arcata Life Drawing Circle in Arcata. Accomplished at depicting a wide variety of subject matter, Joyce’s work focuses particularly on figure painting/drawing as well as making elegant and colorful close-up, large scale paintings of flowers. Joyce works in plein air in the summer months and from photos in the winter, describing the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Gilbert is a multimedia artist, making one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, mixed-media sculpture, and ceramic art. He draws inspiration from nature and the beauty which abounds on California’s North Coast. Lush redwood forests, rugged ocean coastline, wildlife in all its exquisite variety is reflected in the designs of his beautifully crafted work. In addition, his rich Hispanic heritage can be seen in his use of many images from Mexico such as his Dia de los Mu***os tiles. Gilbert realized early on that there was something very special in the creation of lasting images reflecting the world around us, and how we relate to nature. This is clearly reflected in all of Gilberts uniquely created work.

Arcata Artisans has one opening for an artist working in a two-dimensional medium. They are seeking an established local artist whose work complements the gallery’s current offerings. The gallery is organized as a cooperative; the new artist will be selected by the current membership and becomes an equal member of the group.

Membership in a cooperative gallery is a great way to display your art year round. It offers an opportunity to interact with the buying public (members work 1-3 shifts per month, depending upon the season) and to learn about the business of running a gallery (each member takes on a small operational role). The gallery commission is low and the gallery takes care of sales tax and other business matters, leaving artists more time to make art. The gallery is fortunate to be located in a great location on the Arcata Plaza, and to enjoy the support of both our local community and frequent tourists.

Since its opening in June 2003, Arcata Artisans has provided a gallery home for more than 100 of Humboldt County’s finest artists. There are currently 21 member artists presenting a wide range of art and fine craft, including painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, woodwork, metalwork, glass and fiber art. Maybe you will be the newest member?

Our featured artists in the gallery this month are Patricia Sennott, Lynn Carlin and Zak Shea.

Patricia continues to work in these various mediums, beautifully portraying her unique interpretations of subjects such as birds, bees and botanicals.

Lynn Carlin is a painter and mixed-media collage artist who uses nature as inspiration to create abstract works, which uniquely interpret her natural surroundings. In her artist statement Lynn says, “ Nature holds limitless wonder and abstraction. I am fascinated by the patterns on water that occur when light and shadow hit the surface. To capture the essence of how nature feels is always a goal, and it takes me deep within myself. As a painter, my goal is to create freely with no restraint. I try to work fast, intuitively choosing colors and creating an environment that feels right in the moment. Knowing that every color choice and brushstroke changes the composition, I enjoy answering to my impulses. The best part about painting is the freedom I feel. When I am having a good exchange with my work I am focused, free, the music is up, and I’m dancing!”

Zach is a wood worker and mixed-media artist who uses reclaimed, recycled, or refurbished materials to create his one-of-a kind pieces. Zach builds functional sculpture in the form of furniture, frames, fountains, cabinets, sconces, and other objects, but also enjoys making pieces that are purely ornamental as well. Salvaging discarded wood scraps from construction sites or recycling old-growth wood that was headed for the landfill, Zach has learned how to bring the material back to life in his unique and engaging artwork.
