Friends, it is a sad day at Tangerine Mountain, as we mourn the loss of a great teacher, a great man, and a great friend. I regret to share the passing of Professor Emeritus Shozo Sato, the man who is responsible for supporting, teaching, and encouraging us to take the steps that lead to Tangerine Mountain's pursuit and mission to engage in cultural exchange with Japan through kimono and their related arts. The loss of any friend and mentor is naturally hard, but words cannot express how much Sato-sensei's light will be missed. Sato-sensei was the embodiment of "一期一会," as those that he met, taught, and shared his kindness with were given unique and cherished moments that will never leave them exactly the same again. May his light continue to shine through the lives he has touched.

Below we share the public announcement from Japan House at the University of Illinois, with whom we have communicated with about his passing, and with whom we share our condolences. Celebration of life details have yet to be determined, but will be shared as appropriate when known.

----------------------------------------------

Sato sensei lived an extraordinary ninety-one years, leaving a long legacy of achievements and accomplishments. His extensive teaching career of Japanese arts and aesthetics touched generations of students and his productions of kabuki Shakespeare, chado (Japanese tea ceremony), ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), sumi-e (Japanese ink paintings), and shodo (Japanese calligraphy) continue to be enjoyed in the memory of visitors.

Originally coming to Illinois as a visiting artist-in-residence at Krannert Center in 1964, he recognized the need for cultural arts education to build cultural bridges and committed the rest of his life to teaching in the United States. His tenacity and vision for teaching Japanese arts and culture started the original Japan House at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. From a converted Victorian house on Lincoln and California Avenue, Japan House continued to thrive and expand into the current building established in 1998 under the direction of Kimiko Gunji. His generosity and support of the Japan House, along with his wife Alice Ogura Sato and brother-in-law Dr. George Ogura, led to the Ogura-Sato Annex project to build additional teaching space, an accessible tearoom, and much needed storage space. We hope his memory can continue to be honored and shared through Japan House and its mission to share traditional Japanese arts and culture.

For over 60 years, Japan House has been dedicated to fostering cultural understanding, offering new perspectives, and providing a space where visitors can experience tranquility. Rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics and arts—particularly Chado, the Way of Tea—Japan House continues to offer students and the broader community a unique opportunity to cultivate a deeper appreciation of diverse cultures. Sensei envisioned the addition of the Ogura-Sato Annex to support the growth of Japan House's mission. His memory will continue through the lives of students and visitors who can be immersed in the study of Japanese arts and culture at Japan House.

Hey friends and family! I'm so pleased to say that no one in the Tangerine Family is in the hospital anymore, Tangerine Aunt is home and recovering well, and we are starting to catch up to all of the things that have been on the back burner as we've had to turn inward to family. And, part of that involves a step back into a bit of normalcy this weekend at !

I'm pleased to share that we are guests of Anime Milwaukee this year, and that we are not only participating in the Exhibitor's Hall (where you can come and shop for amazing kimono to bring home!), but we also are presenting our Traveling Kimono Exhibition "Constructing Opulence" and educational programming as well (in room N 105 all weekend!).

We truly love you all, and appreciate your love, support, and patience as we addressed the health situations of our family members. We are still working through a backlog of messages, but we are working away, and hoping to kick off our convention year with a happier (and healthier!) start!

EDIT/ADD @ 1:40PM:

-----------------------------------------
❤️❤️❤️Aunt Kathy is out of surgery, and is alive and well. They successfully performed a quadruple bypass, and she's being transferred to ICU for the beginning of her recovery. We obviously will be taking some time to be with family and Aunt Kathy when we are safely able to see her, but we wanted to update everyone and thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and good wishes. We love you all, and are so thankful for your continued kindness, patience, and unending support. ❤️❤️❤️

-----------------------------------------
Hey everyone and our , Cheri here with another brief update, and a heartfelt request.

As you all know from our last post, we've had some medical and life things happening, and we're hoping to have some stock online by now for some Christmas shopping joy for our friends and fans. We thought we were done with medical emergencies and surgeries this year, but the universe had other plans.

Many of you have seen our Tangerine Family helping me at our live events, including our Tangerine Aunt, Aunt Kathy. She started having some strange symptoms, and I met her at the ER last Friday. Things progressed quickly, and as I write this from the hospital waiting room, Aunt Kathy is in the operating room and being prepped for a quadruple coronary bypass surgery.

A lot of this year has been a medical / life struggle behind the scenes here, and we've kept quiet about a lot of them for the sake of privacy and preserving people's peace. And, we know realistically that not everyone wants to see lots of medical stuff pop up on an otherwise happy business / kimono page. But, this information is being shared with Aunt Kathy's prior permission, and with her hopes and request that our larger extended Tangerine family, friends, and followers will take a moment to send up a prayer if you're religious, or a positive thought, good vibe, or whatever feels right to you, to hope for her complete and speedy recovery.

We will get back to business as usual as soon as we can, and we all cannot wait to show you the amazing and beautiful things we have been working on posting for you all. But for this moment, we have to focus on getting our favorite and loved Tangerine Aunt safe and sound.

I will update this message after Aunt Kathy comes out of surgery, either as an Edit/Add or in the comments section. Thank you all for your support and patience, and we hope that you and your loved ones are having a safe and healthy holiday.

Hey friends,

Tangerine Cheri here, checking in on this snowy morning. I know it's been a while since our last update, so I wanted to share how we're doing and touch briefly on what's been happening behind the scenes. Apologies in advance for this post's length, but I'll also cover our Holiday Sale plans at the end.

I'm writing from the hospital as Tangerine Teri is about to undergo surgery. This year has been challenging for the Tangerine family, with eight hospitalizations and four surgeries so far. We also anticipate at least three more surgeries next year. Despite these health issues and some new diagnoses, we're doing our best to stay strong. We're all a stubborn bunch, and despite the universe's best efforts, we're all still here and (mostly) standing.

On top of this, my house/bat situation is sadly still ongoing, and continues to add stress and complications. While I can't discuss details due to litigation, rest assured we're doing what we need in order to fight for our family and home until this matter is resolved (hopefully next year). I've been struggling with anxiety and depression, and at times it has felt like we're stuck on a bad carnival ride that won't end. But despite the difficulties, we're hoping that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

In other words, we're all resilient and determined to move past the challenges this year has brought, so that we can continue experiencing and bringing joy to others. We've been quiet, but rest assured we're still here and not going anywhere.

Now, regarding how all of this has impacted our business, and what's happening with our holiday sales: I apologize for any delayed responses and appreciate your patience. I'm working through my backlog of messages and emails. We *ARE* planning holiday sales and will be updating our webstore with new stock as the days progress. However, with Teri's surgery, our usual Black Friday event will be different this year. We'll announce new stock in our main page and Secret Stash group as we get it posted, and sale prices will be applied directly to our items - - so you won't have to hunt for coupon codes to get deals. (No worries, our Secret Stash members can still use their extra coupon code and stack it on those sales!) So be sure your notifications are set so that you're notified when we post new items to our webstore.

Speaking of the Secret Stash Group, I've discovered someone connected to my house/bat issue may have gained access to our group without legitimate reason. So, to maintain the group's integrity, I'll be reviewing membership and removing those without a valid reason to be there. If in the coming days you find yourself removed in error, please message us so I can review and resolve that.

Thank you all for your love, support, and patience during this challenging year. We're looking forward to a healthier and happier 2025. Special thanks to Tiffany Erickson , Tom Swenson , and all our Tangerine and Fast Food Anime friends for their unwavering support.

If you have any questions, I'll be monitoring this post while waiting for Teri's surgery and during her recovery in the coming days.
