What a difference a week can make in Texas! Just a week ago our azaleas were in full bloom until the “blue norther’” blew thru! Now it feels like spring time again and I just got bit by a mosquito on my walk! I guess the 10 degree weather can kill our plants but not our mosquitoes! 🦟

As today winds down, I’m still pinching myself realizing what a wonderful day “the day after” Christmas can really be if you’re not working retail at the Day After Christmas Sale on Dec 26th! It made Christmas day with the family yesterday so much more of a relaxed day - not worrying about what all had to be done the next day and what time I would need to set the alarm for as to get it all done before the doors opened at 8 or 9am for our customers! Back before we had a POS system at Gene Allen’s, we would need to get to the stores 3 hours before we opened to get everything counted and merchandise separated and organized so we would know what we sold during the Christmas season. For the first time in 31 years, no alarms to be set this morning, I even had time to indulge and ate some pie with coffee this morning for breakfast. 😋Doug and I took our time cleaning up the house together and putting away the dishes and decorations that were used yesterday. I went for a short walk and enjoyed looking thru a new cookbook my daughters gave me for Christmas. Still taking it easy after my back surgery on the 23rd but feeling better/stronger everyday. If you’re out shopping the After Christmas Sales, know how much work goes into getting ready for the sales and thank the sales associates ringing you up for a job/season well done! It’s not easy! Trust me - they will appreciate a word of thanks!!!

Nothing like a little back surgery on Christmas Eve Eve (yesterday) to get me to stick to a strict holiday to do deadline as I’ve always been a bit of a procrastinator!😳 So the table is set with the finest paper, plastic and red solo cups to go along with a Mexican/Southwest inspired dinner for Christmas Day, the presents are all wrapped and bagged, the green hatch chili pork stew is made, tamales and salsas are bought, and the pineapple chess pie, and Mexican brownies (sticking to easy or do ahead dishes) are done. A little light decorating that I could point to hubby where it goes and get er’ done and the mini tree is up! Love this tree I snagged last year at my favorite gift store! 🎄❤️😜
Surgery went great yesterday, home by noon and took a little nappy-poo after a bite of lunch! Enjoyed a great fire in fireplace last night and a nice dinner and an awesome movie - Where The Crawdads Sing- and had a good nights sleep. 💤Following Doctor Barnett’s orders and no BLT’s for a few days(14 to be exact)! (Bending, Lifting, Twisting) may watch a little Netflix or nap whichever comes first this afternoon! Not used to this relaxing schedule before Christmas - it’s quite wonderful! Thanks everyone for your prayers and well wishes this holiday season! Merry Christmas! 🎄❤️🙏❤️🎅

It’s been great to have advance warning that the freezing temps and cold front was on its way so we could be prepared, but in October when we were in Kodiak Alaska in a tent without any kind of cell service or electricity, my only “advance warning” that a big storm/cold front was coming was at 3:11am when my ziplock bag of travel sized liqueurs was shaken off the shelf above my cot and hit me on the side of my face as I was trying to sleep!!! The tent was shaking , rattling and rolling with the 60-70 mph winds, I swear the tent and my cot was a bit on my way feet feet away away 🦶 and the moving as the side of the tent hit me in the face all night long and I decided it was a sign from above (literally) to drink the Vanilla Crown Royal they had fallen on my head and try to go back to sleep. 🏕💨🥃🥶

Yesterday was a magical day! A year ago, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to spend the day (especially 4 days before Christmas) volunteering at Mission Arlington with my youngest daughter Briana and my grandkids stocking and distributing food at the pantry! Sooo much to do there - the morning flew by! The need is great at Mission Arlington and volunteers are needed! Consider a few hours this week - just show up and they will put you to work! Then after a quick lunch at family owned and operated Tin Cup, 😋 I was headed to Brookdale Pecan Park Assisted Living, to play a Christmas sing a long program on the piano!
I was so surprised to walk in and see MaryAnn Long (longtime Gene Allen’s customer/very special friend), all dressed up in her Christmas finest and to cheer and clap for me! 👏👏 What fun to see her - made the day even more special!
So today is a final trip to grocery store, wrap presents and set the table! Whew! I’m tired already! Hope everyone is having a wonderful week before Christmas! Such a different way of life for me - Retirement is grand - and I LOVE IT!!! 🤗❤️🎁🎄🎅

If you have loved ones at Brookdale Pecan Park, come see me as I play my Christmas program - tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday) at 2pm! Sing along to all your favorite Christmas songs! 🎄🎶🎅

Words of Advice! If you’re flying somewhere for the holidays, CHECK YOUR BAG!!! Or at least if the nice man beside you or behind you asks if you need help with your bag getting it in and out of the overhead compartment, for heavens sakes, say YES… Please and thank you! 2 weeks ago when flying a quick trip to Little Rock, I thought I could do it myself with an over packed carry-on and a heavy backpack! I’m a strong independent stubborn woman - right??!!😳By the time I got to my destination later that night and 4 heave/ hos up and down, I knew I had screwed up my back again and the sciatic pain was excruciating and relentless! 😬 I worked at my friend MJ’s beautiful store (the Crown Shop) the next day and took her yoga mat and did my stretches in her office that day with her gorgeous labradoodle Bear, supervising me on the floor! It’s been a rough 2 weeks and after trying everything including PT, lumbar injections and lots of ice packs and meds, after a look/see at a new MRI - that I will be having back surgery on Dec 23rd! I think for sure God had a plan for me to get well and take care of myself once and for all!!
All I want for Christmas is to be able to put my own shoes and socks on and be able to sit for a meal! 🤪😉😱
Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁🎄❤️

Friday Fun Day at The Crown Shop - my best friend MJ’s store in Little Rock! It’s the premiere gift shop, also carrying Hallmark, and is similar to what you loved about Gene Allen’s for so many years. The Crown Shop has been family owned and operated for 51 years and carries so many awesome premiere and exclusive lines. It was fun to be on the retail selling floor (for one day!😜😂) helping their lovely customers find gifts all day long. That was always my favorite part of working at Gene Allen’s! Trust me it’s worth the drive to Little Rock to visit their beautiful store or see something you like in these pictures, call the store at 501-227-8442 -they can wrap and ship to you.
