I began making I Spy quilts for my grandsons and a few very close family friends. After the Sandy Hook school shootings, Ann Curry issued a challenge to do 26 acts of kindness in memory of those lost on that horrible day. God told me to make quilts and give them away. I did so anonymously for the most part. (At least I tried!) I donated to non-profits for silent auctions, to foster parents, to ne
wly adopted children, and to anyone wishing to make a donation to a non-profit in return for a quilt. However, my name is Lisa and I am a fabric-aholic. I am waaayyy past the 26. Last time I checked, it was past 80. We are going to take our grandsons to DisneyWorld next year, so I decided to see if I could pad our budget by selling some I Spy quilts. Hope to at least pay for some of my fabric addiction. Every quilt is different and unique. This is the note I include on all quilts:
I am an I-Spy quilt, although I have, also, been called a Talking Quilt. I have many uses. When your baby is small, they can lie on me on the floor. Tummy Time is more fun with all my bright colors and images. Of course, you can use me as a cover for a sleeping baby. As your baby becomes a toddler, I am still useful. Lay the quilt out in front of you and your toddler and ask easy questions. (Where is something red? Where is a cow? Where is a toy? Where is Santa?) You know - easy questions. I am also quite useful to take on a trip or to the doctor’s office. I can serve as a cover or a toy. As your toddler becomes a pre-schooler, the questions about the quilt change. (Show me something living. Show me different types of transportation. Show me different zoo animals or farm animals.) You get the idea. You can continue using me with different questions as your child grows. (Which animals are mammals? Then discuss why.) Don’t be afraid to use me and then throw me in the washing machine. It’s okay. I am 100% cotton. I can take it. Then when your child is “too grown up” to play with me, either put me away for grandchildren or give me to someone who needs me.
