General Motors issued an urgent do-not-drive recall due to a mechanical hardware defect that can cause the front or rear wheels to lock up suddenly without warning. The recall affects a highly specific batch of 66 pickup trucks and full-size SUVs across the Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac brands.

The Defect and Safety Risk

The problem originates from a missing oil pickup tube inside the transfer case assembly supplied to GM. Without this component:

Internal bearings lack proper lubrication and can quickly fail.

The lack of lubrication causes the drivetrain to lock up suddenly.

While grinding noises may occur beforehand, wheel lock-up can happen instantly at highway speeds, drastically increasing crash risks.

Vehicles Impacted by the Recall

The safety campaign targets two primary pools of vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive:

Certain 2026 Model Year Vehicles: Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV.

Select 2015–2020 Full-Size SUVs: Older models that may have recently received a faulty replacement transfer case during a service repair.

Required Owner Action

Because the hazard is severe, owners should take immediate precautions:

Stop driving the vehicle: Do not drive the truck or SUV, even to take it to the repair shop.

Check your VIN: Verify your vehicle status on the NHTSA Recall Database.

Arrange a tow: If your VIN is flagged, call a local dealer to arrange a free tow for inspection and hardware replacement.
