Native to Mexico and Guatemala, Sanvitalia procumbens, commonly known as Creeping Zinnia, is a low-growing annual. Its lush, mat-forming foliage and branching stems contrast beautifully with its petite yellow flowers, providing an attractive ground cover. Flowers are long-lasting, bringing a whimsical touch to garden beds and containers throughout the summer months.

The scientific name Sanvitalia procumbens derives from the Latin cumbere, meaning “to lie down,” a reference to its trailing growth habit. Despite its common name, however, Creeping Zinnia is only distantly related to the true Common Zinnia (Zinnia elegans). Both belong to the Asteraceae family but are classified in different genera. Sanvitalia procumbens likely earned its common name from the close resemblance of its leaves to those of Zinnia elegans.

Centaurea cyanus is a European native wildflower that has been adapted to North America for some time. Alternatively known as Cornflower or Bachelor’s Button, these annuals range in color from iconic cornflower blue to red, purple, white, and the lovely pink seen here in our trial gardens.

Reaching up to 24 inches in height in dwarf varieties and 36 inches in tall varieties, these flowers additionally offer deer resistance and tolerance to both heat and drought. Centaurea cyanus is an excellent choice for cutting gardens, beds and borders, wildflower mixes, and pollinator plantings alike. Its nectar-rich blooms attract honeybees and native bees and add a subtle flavor and vibrant color to salads, cheeses, and desserts.

We’ve had excellent success with Hyssopus officinalis in our trials this year, where its fragrant, minty-sage scented blooms have attracted a steady stream of native bees, honeybees, and bumble bees.

Native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa, Hyssopus officinalis is a perennial aromatic subshrub that has become naturalized in parts of North America. Valued for both its beauty and resilience, it is well suited for ornamental landscapes, herb and medicinal gardens, and sites with drought, erosion, or poor soils. Hyssop has a long history of cultivation, with documented use in herbal wines dating back to Roman times, while its essential oil is still used today to flavor Chartreuse liqueur.

Rocky Mountain Bee Plant is a North American wildflower native from the Great Plains to California and eastern Washington. Its distinctive flowers bloom in shades of pink, lavender, and occasionally white, with plants reaching up to 48 inches tall.

Cleome serrulata is widely valued for pollinator gardens, conservation, and reclamation projects. This annual is an excellent nectar source for honeybees, wild bees, and other pollinators. Its seeds also provide food for doves and other small birds, while the plant serves as a larval host for the Checkered White butterfly.

Formerly classified as Peritoma serrulata, this wildflower is also commonly known as Navajo spinach. Indigenous peoples traditionally used the plant’s leaves and flowers as both a food source and a pottery dye.

Black-Eyed Susan Vine is a tender perennial with decorative, triangular leaves and masses of cheerful yellow or orange flowers with a dark eye. Native to tropical Africa, it is now a popular garden flower.

Thunbergia alata is an herbaceous twining vine, as this image from our 2025 trial garden demonstrates. This flower is ideal for growing on a trellis in the garden or in hanging baskets and other containers in sunny to partly shaded condition in moderately moist soil.
