Recently I learned a Japanese technique call Kinusaiga. Kinusiaga (a “no-sew” method where fabric is tucked into grooves of a foam board to create stained glass-like pictures). Often called a “quilt without thread” or fabric painting. Artists carve intricate designs into foam or wood and tuck colorful fabric scraps into the grooves to create vivid mosaic pictures without sewing.

"Pumpkin Patch" is my first attempt at this technique and I absolutely love it!! This piece is 8x8" framed.

Today was the first time I have instructed a fabric painting class. The photos below are the fabulous creations of some of the students. Not all had experience with acrylic paint and I am so happy they just went for it! I am going to sew/attach some of these to a canvas bag and it will be raffled off as a prize at our next Art Walk. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching!

I recently finished 2 collages. They are both made using a Gelli Plate. A Gelli Plate (I LOVE this process) is a flexible surface artists use to create monoprints by hand. The process relies on rolling paint onto the squishy surface and using stencils or everyday objects to create textures before transferring it onto paper or fabric.

SOLD-"Let The Music Take You Away"~The paper was then torn and glued to crate her dress and background. The violin strings are sewing thread glutted in place. A variety of yarns are braided and twisted to create the hair.

"Girly Girl"~The image was hand drawn from a reference photos and the papers were torn to create the textures and the 3 dimensionality of the dog. I added a turquoise flower to finish and balance the green through out the piece.

It’s time to say goodbye to Three Little Fishes.

I’ve been working with a Gelli Plate to create monoprints. I’ve come up with pages and pages of colored papers to use for collages. This piece contains several different hand colored papers. Each scale on each fish is a different piece of paper hand placed. The background is rice paper glued down with gold and blue colored sand on top.

It just sold and is a Father’s Day gift for my new clients hubby! How fun is that?!?!

I have been using a Gelli Plate to make monoprints and design my own paper. Gentle Giraffe (GG), is 6x6" and all the paper used in this collage was designed by me. The eyelashes are combed out jute material. This piece is being exhibited at the Main Street Creatives Art Gallery in Brighton at the 6x6 show. I love this piece so much and am pretty much obsessed with this medium!

I have been asked to teach a fabric painting class. I decided I would start with tote bags. Practicing on this particular fabric before I taught the class was important to me. I have yet to come up with the complete project and have been mulling it over. I will get there and hopefully be a teacher everyone likes vs the one they want to throw eggs at! ;-)

The last time I taught a class was when I retired from competitive figure skating at 16. I was an instructor for beginning classes and loved it.

When I envision a project, sometimes it does not come out as planned. This tote bag started out to be a floral design hand painted directly on a tote bag. Once done, I stared at what I had done and did not like it. Boo. So, I decided to start over, sort of. I cut out the flowers that had already been painted and grabbed another tote bag. I painted a blue background and embroidered the original flowers on top. Although it was not what I had originally planned, I really like it. I hope you do too!
