A tenacious group of wayside gardeners in Asheville, North Carolina, became the official stakeholders in a blazing hot gravel lot on June 1, 2017. There was not a single leaf or blossom when we first opened the chain link fence, not any of the pleasing scents of lavender, rosemary, and lemon balm, no pollinating bees and butterflies. Only the pigeons roosting on the nearby rooftops, the acrid whiff of car exhaust on the breeze, and the detritus of thoughtless passersby in a city that attracts as many as twelve million visitors annually. This is the story of that transfromation.
