Featuring in the window here, John Richards. 🔧✨
Some artists see a spark plug and think "car part." John Richards sees a dragonfly wing waiting to happen.
As a mixed media member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, John transforms everyday castoffs — bottle caps, spark plugs, watch faces, soda can lids, colorful wire — into a whole ecosystem of whimsical creatures. Beer and mint tin bottle caps become the shimmering scales of wall-mounted fish. Spark plugs sprout wire legs and glass "wings" to become alien junk bugs. Vintage watch parts and gears assemble into a face bursting with personality.
He doesn't stop at insects and fish, either — hand-painted paper lantern animals, robot mermaids in ring-pull scales, and a can-lid flower with wiring for a center all share space in our gallery windows right now.
It's recycled material, reimagined with a sense of humor and a sculptor's eye. Stop by the Grove Arcade and see for yourself what John can build out of what most of us would throw away. ♻️🎨

🧵 One of our new Guild Members is here!
We're excited to welcome fiber artist Julie Bagamary to the Guild! Her hand-dyed, densely stitched quilted pieces — from serene bird studies to a whimsical standing-tall giraffe — are hanging in our windows right now at the Grove Arcade. Each one blends traditional quilting technique with real painterly storytelling.
And it's Craft Fair week! 🎉
The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands runs July 16–19 at the Harrah's Cherokee Center in downtown Asheville — four days of the region's best traditional and contemporary craft, live demos, and a chance to meet makers in person!

✨ Come watch the magic happen! Guild member Amy Brandenburg of Amy Brandenburg Studio is demonstrating her incredible PMC (Precious Metal Clay) process at the Southern Highland Craft Guild Gallery today and tomorrow, 10am–4pm.
Watch as silver transforms from clay into one-of-a-kind pendants, earrings, and charms — right before your eyes. From tree of life necklaces to Viking Vegvisir compasses to whimsical miniature charm necklaces, Amy's work is as meaningful as it is beautiful.
