Outfitting Simplified
Whittaker Mountaineering was born out of the need for RMI to make sure their clients had the appropriate gear to get to the top of Mt. After decades of trying, reviewing, arguing-over, and recommending gear, we can’t help but know what we’re doing by this point. We know what works, we know what doesn’t, and we use that expertise to stock our store.

We’ve had a lot of new goodies hit the floor this week! What else should we stock in the shop?

📸 January 1953. Camp Hale, Colorado. Jim and Lou Whittaker had just transferred from a Signal Corps detachment in California to the Army’s Mountain and Cold Weather Command, The 10th Mountain Division.

Their assignment: train an elite group of soldiers to survive and operate in the most unforgiving alpine conditions imaginable.

They taught what they knew. Skills built with The Mountaineers in the Pacific Northwest, sharpened as guides on the slopes of Mt. Rainier.

Skiing, climbing, mountain maneuvers, cold-weather bivouacs. The kind of knowledge that keeps people alive above treeline, passed on to soldiers who would need it somewhere far more consequential than a summit.

After their service, Jim and Lou came back to the mountains. Lou founded RMI Expeditions. Jim became the first American to stand on the summit of Everest.

On Memorial Day, we think about that chapter and everyone who served alongside them.

The connection between mountaineering and military service runs deeper than most people know. We wrote about it.
