We know from experience how overwhelming curriculum shopping can be. The options are endless, and so are the opinions about how to homeschool “the right way.”

**Spoiler: there is no one right way.**

Here are a few suggestions so you can simplify and confidently plan your year.

Start with your child. Before you open a single website or catalog, think about your unique child. Consider their age, what lights them up, and how they learn best. A curriculum that fits your child will always outperform the shiny new thing on the market.

Pick your connection anchors first. A connection anchor is the subject that sets the tone for your whole day. It’s the study that gives your family something to read, look forward to, and talk about, even through dinnertime. We find that the studies families really love aren’t always the ones that cover the most ground, but the ones that create the most connection. Choose one or two subjects that create this space throughout your homeschool day. History and science are favorites among BFB families for this very reason.

Fill in around them. Once your connection anchors are placed, the rest of your subjects have a home to fit into. Skills work like math, spelling, and grammar become easier to get through when bookended by subjects everyone enjoys.

Resist the urge to over-plan. A flexible rhythm can be easier to sustain throughout the year than a strict schedule, especially on the hard days. Leave room for deep exploration, rabbit trails, and rest.

Medieval History (5-8) covers 400 to 1600 AD. The Magna Charta was written, the printing press was invented, and John Wycliffe changed the trajectory of Bible translation.
 
There were real kings, like King Richard, and legendary ones, like King Arthur and his knights. Remarkable women, like Queen Eleanor and Joan of Arc, and legendary storytellers, like Shahrazad. This is what a year of California history looks like in your student’s hands. 🌊☀️

This is the beauty of homeschooling. Not the worksheets. Not the curriculum catalogs. Not the planning spreadsheets or the scope and sequences or the standardized tests.

Real connection with our children.

What if the most future-proof education is the one that teaches children how to think? 🌿
 
STEM gets a lot of attention. And for good reason. But the future of the workforce is more uncertain than anyone predicted, and the skills that will matter most are the ones that have always mattered most.
 
The ability to think clearly.
To reason carefully.
To weigh what is true and what is good.
 
History. Literature. Geography. Character Development. These are not soft subjects. Taught well, through great books and real discussion, they are tools for passing wisdom from one generation to the next. They are tools for growing in character and learning to think well. And they are the heart of everything we build at BFB.
