I would like to personally thank every one of my customers and employees for the past 3 years at Eddie’s Five and Dime. I’ve made a difficult decision to not reopen. The past few years have been a wonderful experience working with my great employees and seeing the customers that came through the store on a regular basis. I opened Eddie’s in honor of my father, Edwin Weinmann, as a tribute to the town he grew up in and loved so much. Coincidentally, tomorrow marks the 9th anniversary of his passing.
There have been many ups and downs over the past 3 years. We opened a month before everything was shut down due to Covid. We were able to scrape by during those trying months. Then we were hit by supply chain issues, inflation and a changing economic climate. Then 3 months ago, the unthinkable happened with the fire in my store next to Eddie’s. I don’t feel like I ever got a real chance to have the store I envisioned but I loved the store, nonetheless.
I hope someone will see the possibilities of the building at 504 Commercial St. It has been an integral part of downtown Atchison for well over 60 years now. In fact, if anyone would like help in opening something there, please reach out to me. I’d love to help in any way I can, including sharing vendor contact information or any advice I can give.
It truly has been a pleasure serving Downtown Atchison the past 3 years. There are so many great things going on Downtown right now. I credit that to all the hard working business owners that I interact with daily. It is not easy being a business owner. I know they all love what they are doing but they all need our support now more than ever.
At this point in time, I don’t know what the plan is for Atchison Furniture. That decision will be made in the next couple of months. Again, I can’t thank everyone enough for the past few years. It was an experience I will never forget.
