Hidden inside the tower of Moot Hall in Maldon is this striking brick spiral staircase dating to around 1420 CE. Built during the late medieval period, its tight circular design saved space while strengthening the tower’s structure.

Staircases like this were often intentionally narrow and winding, making them easier to defend and harder for intruders to climb quickly. Each step, worn smooth by centuries of use, tells a quiet story of the generations who passed through the hall’s chambers above.

More than architecture, it’s a vertical timeline—one that still carries visitors upward through six hundred years of English history.
