August 16 is always such a bittersweet day. It has now been 49 years since we lost Elvis, and seven years since Master Kang Rhee passed away on the very same date.

Master Rhee was such an important part of Richard’s life. He gave Richard the karate nickname “Mongoose” because he was so fast, and jokingly called George Klein “Mr. Rat.”

Richard had tremendous respect for Master Rhee. Even many years after Richard stopped practicing karate, whenever he saw Master Rhee he would put his hands together as if in prayer and give him a slight bow. That respect never left him.

I also loved hearing Master Rhee tell his stories at the Memphis Mafia reunions. He had so many wonderful memories to share.

It still seems incredible that Elvis and Master Rhee both left this world on August 16, 42 years apart.

Remembering them both today.

Some dates never become ordinary.

August 16 is one of them.

Forty-nine years ago today, Elvis Presley died at the age of 42.

For millions of people around the world, the music never stopped. The photographs never faded. The stories continued to be told. New generations kept discovering him.

And every August, they come.

They come to Memphis to remember where he rests.
And they come to Tupelo to stand where he began.

Today, we simply remember Elvis.

Today marks 68 years since the passing of Gladys Presley, the beloved mother of Elvis Presley. Elvis honored her memory by sending flowers from Burke’s Florist to her grave at Forest Hill each week. That tradition of remembrance lives on, with Graceland placing fresh roses in her room each year on this day.
