We dusted off our social media accounts to let you know that the Athens County Cougarbats (), a local youth mountain bike team for 6th-12th graders in Athens County, is selling chances to win an awesome bike: a Trek Supercaliber SLR 9.8 (that’s a $7,000 bike!). Other great prizes too. Buying chances to win helps the team pay for equipment, end-of-year celebrations, supplies for race travel, and more. Since we announced our closure we have received a number of requests to purchase Athens Bicycle branded merchandise, so we will open up one last time this Thursday, July 23, from 5-7:30 p.m. We will be on our front porch at 4 W. Stimson Ave. with jerseys, shorts, water bottles, T-shirts, hip sacks and socks for purchase. Feel free to stop by and chat or drive by and honk!

The outpouring of support and well-wishing has been overwhelming, in a great way. We’ve been busy but we will reply to each and every one of you as soon as we can. Today when we came into work we found this and it’s just over the top. We cried! This is what community looks like and means to us. Thank you all for so many kind gestures over the past couple days. @ Athens Bicycle

Athens Bicycle has closed.

We want to thank everyone who has supported our business for over 22 years. We have had great staff members and wonderful customers who have been a pleasure to serve and to get to know.

We have always felt that a good business should give back to its community and we have enjoyed being a part of so many community events and initiatives. We also have loved getting and keeping people on bikes! Your support allowed us to revitalize a corner on Stimson Avenue and to participate in conversations that have expanded bicycle systems in Athens.

We are proud to have helped secure a bicycle friendly designation for the City of Athens, and to have secured funding for the first bike infrastructure in Chauncey (a safe bike route from the library to the up-and-coming connector to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway). Having been involved in all of the discussions that resulted in mountain bike trails at Lake Hope State Park, Strouds Run State Park and Wayne National Forest, we sure do look forward to watching the future economic and social impacts of the Baileys Trail System.

Now for the details. We are still finishing up a few loose ends for specific customers. We are not having a going-out-of-business sale and we are no longer taking in repairs. We do have a few assets for sale for anyone who would want to start their own bike shop.

A bicycle shop is built on service and we were happy to help. We will miss you all and we hope to see you soon.

firefighter Paul Schulz has been commuting by bike to the fire station for decades. He takes the “short way” to work, about 8 miles into town, for his 24-hour shift. When it’s time to go home, he rides a 20-mile extended route, which begins bright and early because shifts start and end at 7 a.m. Here he is headed home from Fire Station 1 on his Krampus loaded with bags. Thank you, Paul, and all first responders for keeping us safe.

This young man has been mowing lawns to save money to buy himself a mountain bike, which we were happy to deliver to him this morning. What a gorgeous day to get a new bike! This was our first delivery under Trek’s new home delivery program. Your new bike is just a few clicks away, and you get our great customer service delivered to your door as well.

The world has changed for now but we are still here to help you. If you have a bicycling need, we can help. Bike shops are considered essential businesses during Ohio’s Stay at Home Order, but our governor is encouraging all Ohioans to stay home, and we are too. Here are the ways we can help you while maintaining a safe distance.

1) We are offering limited hours, 12-4 Monday through Saturday, as well as by appointment. Please knock and we will meet you at the door.

2) Browse our catalog at https://www.athensbicycle.com/catalog/bicycling-1232/ and for purchases or questions, call or text shop owner Pete Kotses at 740-590-8765. You can then pick up your item at our door or we will deliver locally (with gloved hands!)

3) We are accepting bikes for service at the door during the hours outlined above or by appointment (call or text Pete at 740-590-8765).

4) Another way to support our business is to order bikes or products from https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/, have it shipped to our store, and pick it up at our door or have us deliver to your home. If you choose to do this you will still be supporting our shop — Athens Bicycle gets the proceeds of any purchase you make there if you have it shipped to our store vs. your home. You can then pick up or we can provide free local delivery.

5) If you would like to support us by purchasing a gift card, gift cards are available for purchase over the phone or at the door. Call or text Pete at tel:740-590-8765. We can sell these over the phone and mail them to you.

6) If you would like to set up an appointment outside of our limited hours, call or text Pete at 740-590-8765.

Wash your hands, ride your bike, then wash your hands again! Stay safe and healthy.
