Some teas are more than a cup. They are a glimpse history and into a tea tradition that has survived for generations.

Deep in the forests of Mizoram, tea leaves are plucked from wild tea trees and processed using an ancient method once practiced across Northeast India. In this small village, the tradition of pounding tea lives on. The freshly plucked leaves are withered, pounded by a large mortar and pestle (used also for pounding rice), fermented, and finally sun dried, creating a tea that is quite exceptional.

We were fortunate to discover this remarkable tea making practice during our 2026 summer sourcing journey through Northeast India, and we are excited to share it with you as a pre release.

This is a tea with a story you simply have to taste.

It’s not been easy for us to work together as founders of Herbs & Kettles- as you can see we have different, very strong opinions.
We’ve been working on our communication skills and getting better.
Four years in, we still cold brew our Nilgiri Green Twirl differently, but have learned to accept each other’s ways.

Every sourcing trip to India reminds us why we do this. There’s nothing quite like sitting down with our farm partners, walking through the tea gardens, and sharing stories over cups and cups of tea. We’ve just returned after selecting this season’s harvests, and we can’t wait for you to taste our rich, malty chai base and beautiful second flush Darjeelings.

As we pay our farmers and prepare for our busiest season, we’re asking for your support. Rising ingredient and shipping costs have made the last couple of years especially challenging, but we’ve worked hard to keep bringing you the teas you love. From Assam, to Mizoram. We love what we do, as a small tea business.
