“I just need to be less dramatic” is something I often hear in my clinical work. Or, “ I hate that I’m so dramatic.”
These are judgments of our internal responses- having big reactions does not make you dramatic. This is your body’s way of telling you something is going on- something that needs attending to. Whether it’s the adult you that needs some gentle, kind attention in that moment to better be able to ride the big wave, or younger you who needs some love and guidance—our strong responses deserve our compassionate attention.
Let’s stop minimizing ourselves, shall we? (And others too- we don’t get to call other people’s big feelings dramatic either!)
Sometimes all it takes is a moment where we sink inwards, hold ourselves in the areas of tension, and breathe deeply. Sometimes it’s adding something nurturing to help take care of ourselves in those harder emotional moments.
But let’s be really careful with how we talk to ourselves and others. This minimizing language can set us up for our own emotional neglect and perpetuate a sense of helplessness and stuckness. It’s quite liberating when we validate deeply our experiences.
How about we save the word dramatic for when people are actually being…dramatic? (Ie: acting!!)
