😩😩‼️‼️

We know that at the root of some of our poor outcomes is disparities in care. Sadly, a study showing Black mothers are more likely to receive unnecessary c-sections when compared to their peers, did not surprise us.

Why are we not surprised? Part of our training and at the core of our organization is being aware of disparities in care and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Our curriculum includes information and history about how these disparities came to be, and how birth workers can be support their clients in reducing individual risks. We already suspected this type of care.

Let us be clear: the issue is very much systemic, and doulas are not the solution to the problem. However, with training and education, our doulas can help their clients navigate the unfair biases in care which can exist.

The large study of nearly 1 million births at 68 hospitals in New Jersey, researchers found that obstetricians are more likely to perform unnecessary C-sections on Black mothers when compared to white mothers. Shockingly, Black women were 25% more likely to give birth via a c-section.

When we consider that Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth related complications, we have to wonder, what impact is unnecessary surgery having on those numbers?

"WHY does my baby always want to nurse at night?!" 😩

Listen, it can be tiring...we get it! But, it's biologically normal for infants to feed at night. The problem isn't baby, or biology, it's simply that many aspects of modern culture don't support this need among moms and babies.

We unfortunately can't change the lack of support, but understanding why baby is up to feed, again, can help us navigate feeling like we're parenting "wrong" or there's something wrong with baby.

Babies feed at night because:

✨️ Milk supply regulation can depend on it
✨️ It's normal infant biology
✨️ Comfort and regulation
✨️ Growth and developmental spurts, babies simply can't always consume the engery needed only during daytime hours
✨️ They have small stomachs that fill and empty rather quickly
✨️ Connection and safety

And remember, this doesn't last forever. Young babies have different needs than toddlers and children.

👇🏽 Do you struggle with nighttime feeds?

🩸✨ Breast milk is made from blood, not directly from what you eat until nutrients reaches your blood stream.

Your body uses nutrients from your bloodstream to make milk that's uniquely designed for your baby. Even when your diet isn't perfect, your body can often draw on nutrient stores to support milk production.

This is why, for most breastfeeding families, foods that make you gassy don't make your baby gassy. Gas is produced in your intestines it doesn't pass into your breast milk. Occasionally, you could consume foods with proteins which impact baby's digestion, but this isn't common, and when gas occurs, it is rarely a concern. Uncomfortable, yes, abnormal concern? Rarely.

There are always exceptions. Some babies have conditions such as cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) or milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI), where proteins from certain foods can trigger symptoms. In those cases, dietary changes may be recommended.

But for the average healthy breastfeeding parent and baby, specialty elimination diets aren't necessary. Most newborn gas, fussiness, and frequent feeding are normal parts of infancy, not signs that your diet is causing a problem.

Some women are sensitive to certain herbs, but in culinary levels, it's rarely a problem. But keep an eye if you have concerns.

If your baby has concerning problems you think might be associated with your diet, seek the support of an IBCLC and follow up with baby's pediatrician.

✨️ Evidence matters. So does reassurance.

There’s a common misconception that hiring a doula means they will speak on your behalf and share your birth plans with healthcare providers. But that’s not how advocacy works! 📣✨

A doula isn't there to make decisions on your behalf or speak for you to your medical team. Instead, we help you find and use your own voice.

Before birth, we help you understand your options, research evidence-based information, and clarify your preferences. During birth, if a decision needs to be made, your doula is there to:

• Remind you of your birth plan and personal preferences.
• Prompt you to use the acronym "BRAINS" (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, No/Not Right Now, Safety/Satisfaction).
• Create a calm space so you can pause, discuss with your partner, and make an informed decision without feeling rushed.

We don't stand in front of you; we stand beside you, ensuring you remain at the centre of your own birth experience.
