As a woman-led company, International Women’s Day is a celebration we will never pass up. Today, we want to recognize one woman in particular:

Margaret Mead was an American cultural anthropologist, an intellectual, a scientist, and a Philadelphia native. Although she is the author of numerous books on primitive societies, she also wrote about various contemporary issues – as well as being one of the most outspoken women in the twentieth century regarding cannabis legalization.

At the height of her career, on October 27th, 1969, Margaret spoke at a Senate hearing where she argued that continuing to keep ma*****na illegal was “a new form of tyranny by the old over the young”, according to an article archived in the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. She continued to blast the hypocrisy of its criminalization by alluding to how an adult will walk around with a cocktail in one hand and a cigarette in another, when the effects of both are arguably more damaging than cannabis. “The attempt to restrict the use of this youth choice has resulted in graver social consequences than those associated with Prohibition in the 1920s.” She continued to cite the cultural practices of other nations where ma*****na is utilized regularly for work, medicine, and relaxation.

But despite her knowledge and the facts presented, Mead’s pleas fell upon deaf ears. In the years that followed we saw the continuation of anti-cannabis propaganda and the infamous “War on Drugs”. Imagine what could have been has she been taken seriously that day…

CJ Wallace, inspired by his late father, Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace, founded Think BIG, a company that creates curated cannabis products rooted creativity, curiosity, and collaboration. His company advocates for safe use of ma*****na through the development of new products, stories, research, and charitable projects, while promoting the plant’s ability to aid in personal expression, health, and wellness. Think BIG is also a champion of criminal justice reform by advocating for the plant’s decriminalization. “Many people don’t know my dad was arrested for a cannabis conviction before he died. So, had he lived, he would have been dealing with the criminal justice system like so many other black men.'”
