stood apart from other Motown acts by maintaining their exact original four-member lineup
They originally formed under the moniker The Four Aims. They changed it right before signing their first recording contract with Chess Records to prevent people from confusing them with the popular white vocal quartet, The Ames Brothers.

They started as jazz crooners: Before signing with Motown Records and recording pop-soul hits, they spent a decade singing jazz and standard show tunes. Berry Gordy initially signed them to Motown’s jazz subsidiary, Workshop, and recorded a jazz album that Gordy ultimately chose to shelve in favor of a mainstream R&B sound.

Despite possessing one of the most powerful, commanding voices in soul music history, lead singer Levi Stubbs flatly refused to ever change the group's name to "Levi Stubbs and the Four Tops". He insisted on absolute financial and promotional equality among all four members. (Wow That’s notable 😊)

Group member Renaldo "Obie" Benson was a primary co-writer behind one of the greatest songs of all time, "What's Going On". After witnessing police brutality at an anti-war protest in Berkeley, Benson wrote the song but the Four Tops didn't want to record a political track, so he gave it to Marvin Gaye instead
