“Buried”

The skeleton mosaic transfer image is from a photo I took in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Di Napoli. It was a Roman floor mosaic of a skeleton holding wine jugs, found at the historic site of Pompeii. Memento mori. 💀

“Ravens At Play”

Today’s painting is getting back to bright colors. I’m all over the place, but it’s style exploration, right?!

Inspiration: I recall seeing a pair ravens flying and playing in the rain on a recent trip to Crested Butte, CO. They were having so much fun! I watched them chase each other in the air, performing acrobatics, dives, and actually touching in mid-flight. It was wonderful to watch.

I began this painting with some acrylic paint and Stabilo pencil, drawing a loose aspen tree underpainting (visible in the wing tips). I added encaustic medium all over and applied a laser transfer of one of my photos of the ravens. I fused that layer, then drew/painted the red background with oil pastels. I cut out a stencil of one of the ravens in flight, and used that as the mask for the background. Fused again, then painted with water mixable oils. Fused again, and this is where I stand. 🐦‍⬛

The colors and segmented areas remind me of southwestern Native American jewelry designs.

WIP - Today’s painting start. I have no idea where I’m going with this one. 😂

I have to resolve the background, to make the composition more balanced. I do have some ideas for elements at the top though. Additionally, I’ll be making the background more saturated, and possibly a vibrant red-orange. 🤤

“Ravello Gatto” - This little cat looked so cute in the medieval town of Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. I was taking pics of all the strays around this historic town. I took some pics of this particular cat, knowing I’d want to incorporate it into some artwork someday.

This is a photo transfer onto an existing daily. Scroll for the photo inspo. 🐈‍⬛

The pattern at the bottom was also from a Ravello photo I took (not shown in this post).

From a photo I took in Positano, Italy last year. It just stood there on a roof and let me snap a few pics. Probably waiting to steal snacks…

Another fox transfer on another daily painting rework. This one was oil pastels (I think). I added a photo transfer of my backyard foxy baby. It’s like it’s looking out through the woods and trees, camouflaged and safe.

Cold wax over the paper and the fox on top. I love the way wax deepens the pigments and adds a subtle, satiny depth to the paper.

This background is reminiscent of the aspen trees in Colorado. The raven bird was a photo I took in Crested Butte. Lots of hand-carved texture!

Revisiting encaustic. This piece is a collage from some photos I took. The raven is from Colorado. The iron grate is from Positano. It’s a laser transfer and oil paint over encaustic and fused with heat.

I reworked an existing encaustic that’s been sitting in my studio for years. Literally, years. It was a brownish, rustic background with incised lines. I decided to see how the image transfer would work. I have to say, I love it. 🖤 🐦‍⬛
