Behind the Friends cast's historic collective bargaining success was a moment of genuine selflessness that Matthew Perry never forgot and he made sure to give David Schwimmer full credit for it.

At the time the six original cast members began negotiating their contracts as a unit, Schwimmer was, by every industry measure, the hottest commodity among them. Ross Geller's storyline with Rachel had captivated audiences, and Schwimmer's individual profile had risen to a point where he genuinely could have leveraged his popularity to demand a significantly larger salary than his co-stars.

He didn't.

Perry explicitly credited Schwimmer with saving the entire cast millions of dollars by refusing to break from the group and negotiate separately. Rather than capitalising on his individual bargaining power, Schwimmer made the deliberate choice to keep the six of them unified understanding that the moment any single cast member accepted a different deal, the collective leverage that made their negotiations so powerful would collapse entirely.

It was Schwimmer's insistence on equality, according to Perry, that helped establish the template for their historic negotiations the same solidarity that eventually led all six actors to secure $1 million per episode for the show's final seasons, and that Courteney Cox later credited with helping make her, Aniston, and Kudrow the highest-paid women in television history.

Schwimmer had every justification to ask for more. Instead, he chose to make sure everyone got the same.

Sometimes the most powerful thing a star can do is refuse to act like one.
