On this day 118 years ago, the Harriet Tubman Home for Aged and Indigent Negroes (the Home for the Aged) opened in Auburn, New York.

Harriet Tubman devoted over twenty years of her life to opening the institution. With the help of the A.M.E. Zion Church, she was able to see her vision of creating a place of refuge and compassionate care realized on June 23, 1908. Tubman became a patient of the Home for the Aged in 1911 and two years later she passed away peacefully in the care of the women who worked there.

Founded on Tubman’s steadfast belief in human dignity and the importance of caring for those in need, the opening of the Home for the Aged was an important milestone in Tubman’s humanitarian work.
