Ice Breaker Korean Fir

Abies koreana ‘Ice Breaker’ became an overnight sensation after its discovery as a mutation growing on A. koreana ‘Horstmann’s Silberlocke’ and is sought for its stunning contribution to the garden! Two-toned needles recurve up and around their stems to expose a bright white, waxy underside of the green needle. Slow growing with a rounded form when young, it may eventually mature into a broadly pyramidal small tree. This spectacular, colorful dwarf won the distinction of the American Conifer Society‘s 2014 Conifer of the Year.

Our Weeping White Spruce has a corrected leader now after a bird broke it off a year ago.

Picea glauca ‘Pendula’ was “rediscovered” by Jean Iseli in 1982 at the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, where a specimen had grown since 1958. Iseli fell in love with the distinctive tree’s formal, narrow, conical shape and its pendulous, stiffly held, drooping branches and loads of light, gray-green foliage and was determined to get it into the gardens and landscapes of today’s gardeners. The original tree was propagated by D. Hill Nursery from a tree in a native stand near Guelph, Ontario. Thanks to Jean Iseli, this elegant Weeping White Spruce was not lost to cultivation.

Green Screen® Arborvitae

Green Screen® grows quickly while effortlessly maintaining a narrow footprint. Feathery sprays of lush green, fragrant foliage accentuate this hybrid arborvitae’s slim and sophisticated silhouette, and its naturally slender form gracefully tapers to a spire-like tip without pruning. Use this Iseli® introduction to create a beautifully low maintenance privacy screen that’s a fresh twist on the traditional eastern arborvitae hedge. Deer resistant.

Mugo Pines are tough, textural, and timeless. These rugged evergreens are beloved for their dense needles, compact growth, and incredible adaptability. Whether you’re designing a modern landscape or a naturalistic rock garden, Mugo Pines deliver year-round structure and color.

Why they’re desirable:

• Hardy and low maintenance; they thrive in sun, wind, and poor soil.
• Compact and slow growing, which makes them perfect for small gardens or container displays.
• Rich green needles and sculptural forms bring texture through every season.

Use a dwarf Mugo as an anchor in a mixed border, combine several in a gravel garden for a mountain-inspired feel, or let one sprawl over a stone wall for a natural look. Their tidy form also balances beautifully with ornamental grasses, heathers, and colorful perennials.

Here is a list with ten of our favorites!

Miss Grace Dawn Redwood

Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Miss Grace’ is the first Metasequoia cultivar with strongly weeping branches. This gorgeous plant makes a superb living sculpture when it is staked up so the branches drape freely. The tree’s small needles and thin branches resemble those of the species Taxodium, but with opposite, not alternate, buds and needles. When the deciduous conifer drops its foliage, the peeling bark and swooping framework supply winter interest. Discovered as a witch’s broom in New York, it was introduced by Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery, in Gaston, Oregon.

The blooms on our Scarlet Fire® Dogwood are still going strong! Cornus kousa Scarlet Fire® (‘Rutpink’) # PP28,311 features huge, dramatic, deep pink to fuchsia bracts on a sturdy, disease resistant small tree. A real stunner in late spring, the big, showy bracts stand out against the rich green foliage. Prior to the showy flowers, early spring leaves emerge streaked with purple. Later, after the summer flower show, purple pink fruits swell and become attractive to birds for a delicious summer treat. Autumn brings red to purple leaf color to finish the season.

Cryptomeria (Japanese Cedar)

Native to Japan where it is revered as the national tree, the genus Cryptomeria is valued for its stately grandeur and superior, fragrant wood. Although only one species exists (Cryptomeria japonica), Iseli Nursery offers a diverse collection of cultivars that provide many varying habits, unique textures, sizes, and colors for all sized landscapes. Cryptomeria, commonly called Japanese Cedar, prefers ample moisture, tolerates partial shade, and appreciates protection from cold desiccating winds.
