This has been a long game, because it often takes me quite a while to follow through with something once I get an idea🙃. I ordered these seeds for Clitoria ternatea more than two years ago, and then I felt like it was too late in the season to get started with them by the time they arrived from overseas. Finally got to try out making this tea today! It does not really taste like much of anything.
The blue butterfly pea is an edible flower that colors foods and drinks this beautiful, bright cerulean blue. With the addition of an acid (in this case lemon juice), it turns bright violet- a natural way to add a fun unusual color.
The butterfly pea is native to southeast Asia, and grows as an easy climbing vine in full sun, with its bright, sapphire blossoms. The lovely blue color is a result of the petals containing pigments called anthocyanins.
Traditional Ayurvedic medicine uses the plant to boost memory, reduce stress, and improve general wellness. The flower can also be used to dye natural fibers, and is used by traditional societies in Asia to do so.
I’m seeing some good pods growing now and have been harvesting and drying quite a few flowers off the couple plants that I have, so should be able to propagate more of this unique plant again next year and with any luck I’ll have some available for other people to try too. 💙💙💙🌱🌱🌱
