Herald Nation

Herald Nation The social media page for Barberton, Norton and the surrounding area. Davis established the Barberton News in the basement of the National Hotel.

Since the early days of Barberton, residents have relied on local newspapers to keep up with community news. Shortly after Barberton’s founding in 1891, the town’s first weekly paper, the Banner and Bulletin, appeared at Saturday newsstands. Though short-lived, lasting just a year, it helped spread the nickname “Magic City.”

In 1892, local teacher John R. Strongly Democratic in tone, the paper re

flected Davis’s politics. He was later elected mayor, overseeing Barberton’s incorporation and the arrival of streetcars. The News came to an end in 1929 after Davis’s death. To balance political voices, attorney Edward Huene launched the Republican-leaning Barberton Leader in 1894. Under the later ownership of Eugene Rowe, a former Akron Beacon Journal editor, the Leader served the city until 1922. Other short-run papers followed, including the Barberton Telegram, Barberton Socialist, Barberton Times, and the Barberton Post, which published through 1960. The most enduring of Barberton’s newspapers was the Barberton Herald, founded in 1921 in Kenmore and moved to Barberton in 1923. It absorbed both the News and the Leader, becoming the city’s dominant local paper. Over nearly a century, the Herald chronicled Barberton life, from neighborhood events to civic debates. By the 2000s, it was selling more than 8,000 copies a week and had expanded to online subscribers. But after nearly 100 years, the Barberton Herald closed its doors on December 31, 2022. Its legacy now lives on in a volunteer-run community page known as Herald Social, listed publicly as Herald Nation, which carries forward the tradition of local storytelling in Barberton.

False-report investigation: Woman no longer wants her dog

A woman who called police claiming she had recently rescued a dog and was trapped in her home after it became aggressive is now being investigated for possibly filing a false report.

According to Barberton Police Incident Report #202601561, officers responded to a residence in the 80 block of Helen Street NW on May 24 after a woman reported that a dog she had "rescued" the previous day from Akron had bitten and scratched her, forcing her to take refuge in a bedroom because she was afraid to leave.

As officers worked to locate animal resources and assistance, neighbors informed police that the dog had actually belonged to the woman for approximately six weeks and had been returned to her after getting loose the night before.

Police said the woman later admitted she had not just rescued the dog but had had the dog for several months and acknowledged providing false information. She maintained that the dog had growled, lunged, and scratched her, but officers concluded she was attempting to find a way to have the dog removed from her home.

The report has been forwarded to prosecutors for review of possible Making False Alarms or Reports charges. The woman was provided contact information for organizations that may be able to assist with the dog.

🚨 Man spits on bystander after large brawl at Block 7

A large disturbance involving approximately 15 people outside Block 7 Bar and Grill resulted in a disorderly conduct citation and a hospital transport early Saturday morning.

According to Barberton Police Incident Report #202601558, officers were dispatched at 1:44 a.m. May 24 to Block 7 Bar and Grill, 524 W. Tuscarawas Ave., following reports of a large fight in the street.

When officers arrived, they observed numerous individuals gathered outside. Police said 30-year-old Thomas Gerald Ezell stood out because he was shirtless, bleeding from the mouth, yelling at people, and attempting to provoke additional fights.

Officers witnessed Ezell intentionally spit in another person's face without provocation. Despite repeated commands from officers, he allegedly continued yelling, cursing, and causing a disturbance.

The Barberton Fire Department responded to evaluate a significant cut on Ezell's upper lip, but he refused treatment. Officers initially planned to issue a Disorderly Conduct (M4) summons and release him to a friend. However, after being advised he was too intoxicated to be in public, Ezell reportedly attempted to walk away and had to be detained again.

Police ultimately transported Ezell to Summa Barberton Hospital under an emergency admission due to concerns that he was unable to care for himself and was ignoring a serious facial injury.

RIPPING PAGES FROM A JAIL BIBLE

A Barberton man arrested Tuesday on an outstanding warrant found himself facing an additional charge after police say he damaged a Bible while being held in the city jail.

According to Barberton Police Incident Report #202601585, officers arrested 46-year-old Brandon Earl Woodruff at approximately 2:54 p.m. on May 26 near Wooster Road West and Sixth Street NW. Police said Woodruff had an active Barberton Municipal Court warrant stemming from a Public Indecency case after failing to complete a court-ordered stay at CASC.

After being booked into the Barberton Jail, a jailer reportedly observed Woodruff removing pages from a jail-issued Bible. Police say Woodruff admitted to tearing pages from the book and handed one of the pages to officers after it was found in his possession.

As a result, Woodruff was charged with Criminal Damaging in addition to being held on the outstanding warrant.
