Khemmis - Khemmis

One of my favorite concert memories is getting to see Khemmis in a small venue in Cleveland with my buddy Aaron. We got to meet the band before the show, and they were wonderful human beings and put on an absolutely incredible show that evening.

But I’ve got to tell you, even if they had been absolute bastards and played like dogsh*t that night, I’d still be in love with this new album.

It’s everything I’d hoped for. A marriage of their doom and death sound with more traditional metal and blackened elements, tighter than ever, and still possessed of everything that makes them unique.

For me, that uniqueness often centers on the sonorous vocals of Phil Pendergrast. His depth of range and the way it contrasts and resonates with both the heaviness of the instrumentation and with co-vocalist Ben Hutcherson’s dirty growls is a thing of true beauty.

This is the band’s fifth full-length and I daresay they have achieved their final form.

We’re stocking the transparent orange edition, appropriate for the radiant energy this album crackles with. Stop in and see Jess today and pick up a copy, she’ll be there noon-6pm.

Angine De Poitrine - Vol. I and Vol. II

After making a splash with their bizarre appearance and incredible playing, the debut albums from Angine De Poitrine are finally making an appearance on vinyl (CD will follow next week).

If you don’t know them, Angine De Poitrine make music for A Certain Type Of Dude. And you will know whether you are that type of dude or not pretty quickly into your first listen.

There’s a reason they have become such a sensation and it has surprisingly little to do with their avant garde costumery or their enigmatic anonymity. It really is all about the playing.

Weaving together jazz and rock structures in mind-bending manner, the duo infuse their jams with everything from world music vibes to classic rock shredding. It never stops being impressive, propulsive, and utterly unique. It’s heady, but in an acid rock way, not a w***y noodly way, and you may find yourself absolutely smitten… if you’re A Certain Type Of Dude.

Sometimes technical proficiency can lend itself to a sterile sound. Not so here, as Angine De Poitrine bring a relentlessly fresh and energetic approach that feels as improvisational as it does clearly structured. It’s a lot to wrap your mind around, and I firmly believe that the best way to enjoy it is to not even try. Just let it take you on the journey.

We’re all just dogs in God’s hot car, or so the saying goes. But maybe if you’re lucky, this is what’s playing on the radio while you’re trapped inside.

We have both Vol. I and Vol. II available, come sn**ch them up and drop a needle on the madness pressed to wax. Daniel is helping me out and will be here 11-7. If you can’t make it down, hit the site and lock in an order for pickup or delivery.

John R. Miller - The Great Unknowing

If everything goes well, I’ll be getting to see this guy play on one of my favorite stages tonight.

I’ve been listening to John R. Miller since the Fox Hunt days, through to Prison Book Club and well into his career as a solo artist. I’m a fan, and for my money, John R. is one of the finest songwriters our great state has ever produced.

So a new album is cause for celebration, and The Great Unknowing deserves every bit of praise that will be laid upon it. It’s a brilliant synthesis of everything Miller is good at, reaching back to those PBC days to incorporate some rock elements and experimenting with new sounds while remaining steadfastly true to who he is and where he grew up.

Beyond simple Appalachian fatalism, Miller taps into something universal and revelatory about the human condition. The sort of thing you can only truly know if you’ve touched that deep pool of weird ennui that seems to lie beneath the bedrock of who we are, dragging your hand lazily across its surface.

There are some absolutely brilliant turns of phrase here, and I’m reminded of what a gifted lyricist he is at every turn. As with previous work, I delight at not only hearing them for the first time, the way his words unfurl thoughts, but also in knowing that I’ll be chewing on these for the rest of my life, turning them over and over again in my mind.

I hope Miller finds all the success he deserves, or at least as much as he wants with this one. Until then I suppose he’ll be “painting the town, wearing smoke rings for a crown”

Daniel is helping me out today, he’ll be here until 7. Stop by and see him, or hit up the site and grab this one for pickup or delivery. It had its full physical release first and won’t hit streaming until next month, so here’s your chance to hear it the way it was meant to be heard.

Blood Incantation - All Gates Open - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Blood Incantation’s Absolute Elsewhere is easily one of my favorite albums of the past decade. I’ve been a fan since first hearing the band, but I am particularly drawn to their increasing use of ambient sound.

Absolute Elsewhere merges that vibe with their potent blend of cosmic death metal for something truly unique and wonderful. So it’s no surprise that I’ve been eagerly waiting for All Gates Open to have a standalone release on vinyl.

This is the soundtrack to the documentary of the making of Absolute Elsewhere. But it’s so much more than that. Four tracks totaling an hour runtime, it is a fully developed ambient experience. I find it to be meditative, beautiful, and profound.

This isn’t their first fully ambient album, that would be Timewave Zero, another personal favorite. I’ve heard All Gates Open posed as the sort of light to Timewave Zero’s darkness, and I can certainly feel that vibe. It has a gentle positivity to it, a sense of growth and discovery that differs from the shadowy exploratory side of Timewave Zero.

Shimmering synthscapes and brilliant depth of field provide a sense of inward progression and movement. If you’d told me this was a long-lost experimental ambient record from a previous era and not the soundtrack to the documentary of the making of one of the greatest death metal albums of the modern era… yeah, I’d believe you.

This release also includes the full documentary in HD on Blu-Ray alongside the official music videos for ‘Obliquity of the Ecliptic’, ‘Luminescent Bridge’ and ‘The Stargate’. There’s a booklet and poster included as well, and we are stocking the limited edition “Algae” pressing, a gorgeous marbled blue that seems to glow with eldritch energy.

These have sold briskly with our crowd, we have a couple copies left, stop in and see me to pick one up or hit the site for an online order for pickup or delivery. I’ll be here until 7.

Air
• Moon Safari
• Talkie Walkie

Two of my favorites by Air, this is the first time we’ve been able to stock Talkie Walkie and I was very happy to finally be able to pick up a copy.

The late 90’s and early 00’s saw a lot of blending of electronic and pop influences, but what fascinated me about Air was how they also incorporated older sounds. Whether that be the loungey vibes of Serge Gainsbourg and 60’s pop or the pure electronica of 70’s era Kraftwerk, Air synthesizes something new from their diverse range of influences.

The result is something languid and dreamy, soft and gorgeous. It’s no wonder they were selected to compose the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, what they do is cinematic through and through.

I’ve spent countless hours with these albums and they are still just as wonderful as the first time I heard them.

Stop by and see me, I’ll be here until 7.

The Red Clay Strays
• Grateful
• Moment Of Truth
• Made By These Moments

Forever thankful to ol’ Brother Abe Partridge for bringing these guys into my life.

It’s been amazing to watch The Red Clay Strays go from playing to a couple hundred people to headlining huge shows, and it’s all so well-earned and well deserved.

This latest album, Grateful, reflects on both that success and the intervening hard times in true-to-who-they-are fashion by offering up humble thanks and hope for better days across 11 tracks of gorgeous gospel-tinged folk rock n’ soul.

These Alabama boys are doing it right.

We’ve got Grateful on a cream blend vinyl as well as restocks of Moment Of Truth (on translucent sea glass) and Made By These Moments (on milky white) and it’s a perfect Sunday to drop the needle on some Strays. Jess will be there noon-6pm, stop by and see her or hit the website and grab what you need for pickup or delivery.

And big thanks to birder supreme Josh for the hookup on the hat.

Sierra Ferrell
• Live At Third Man Records
• Trail Of Flowers
• Long Time Coming

If you’ve not yet had the chance to see Sierra Ferrell live, this album cut live to acetate at Third Man Records in Nashville is about as close as you’re going to get without buying a ticket.

It’s an incredible track list spanning both of her studio albums and beyond, with her gorgeous voice front and center. I was reminded of the days prior to her recording any of her solo material when the only way you could hear her was to catch her playing live, or to watch the excellent Gems On VHS episodes featuring her playing and talking about her life. Lightning in a bottle.

I’m not one to take pride in the works of others, but I will say that I’m happy to have her among the vanguard of West Virginia musicians representing our great state who are out there finding success in the world. She’s just as weird, wild, and wonderful as WV herself.

This one is pressed to red vinyl, and we also have the “Silver Dollar” variant of Long Time Coming as well as her Grammy-winning Trail Of Flowers on the shelf. Stop by and see me, I’ll be here until 7.

Monolord - Neverending

I was late to the Monolord game, but have come to be a massive fan in recent years. Their particular brand of spacey stoner doom scratches all of my itches, so to say I was looking forward to their latest would be an understatement.

And it's a marvelous evolution for the band, while still treading the path they have forged for themselves. A little tighter, more emphasis on the hooks, but never without compromising that massive sound they have come to be known for.

The band worked with producer Sylvia Massey on Neverending and you can feel the fresh energy she brings to the fuzzed-out monolith that is Monolord. Her production is crisp but not overly polished, letting every element of the instrumentation breathe while Jäger's vocals weave throughout, the voice as instrument in complement with everything else.

Speaking of vocals, we even get a little taste of death doom with a guest appearance by Jörgen Sandström (Entombed, Grave) on the album's closing track, "It's Neverending". What a brilliant way to end the album, as the band's heaviness finds new purchase and meaning upon the rough shores of Sandström's growls. I'd love to see a full side project develop here.

(And yes, today's hat is a reference to the lyrical themes of "You Bastard")

We are stocking both the sea blue vinyl as well as the Indie Exclusive orange with multicolor splatter variant. Stop in and see me, l'll be here until 7.
