Hulder - Verbolgen

Happy Metal Monday, everyone.

This one dropped last month and I’ve just been able to take the time to give it a proper listen.

I love Hulder’s take on black metal. It’s the perfect balance of raw ferocity, folkish textures, and enough production value that you can actually distinguish the talent of those involved. Verbolgen ups the ante by layering a more expansive atmospheric sound into the mix and I find myself fully drawn in.

Synth melodies anchor blastbeats and shredding riffs, all punctuated by lead vocalist Mars’ guttural shrieks and supplemented by Necreon’s lower register backing vocals. It feels huge, the sort of thing that takes you beyond the room you’re listening in, as dark shadowed lands unfurl before you.

It feels good to escape to this world on a hot September day.

Green Lung - Necropolitan

It’s difficult for me to be entirely objective when it comes to Green Lung, as they have become one of my favorite bands over the past few years. Blending wicked occult rock with the alchemical thunder of early heavy metal, the band makes music that feels torn from another era. As appealing to fans of classic rock as it may be to metal heads, Green Lung are like if a 70’s cult horror film made a devil’s crossroads wish to become a rock band. And I absolutely love it.

So Necropolitan has easily been my most anticipated album of the year. I wasn’t initially sure how I’d feel about the shift from 2023’s This Heathen Land’s more pastoral and paganistic setting to what seemed to be more urban grounds, but there was no cause for worry.

While the timeline may shift to more modern times (not too modern, late 1800’s are referenced throughout) the themes remain just as rooted in darkness and devilry. There’s also a warning to be heeded regarding technology and what demons we may have unleashed post-Industrial Revolution laced into a few tracks that struck a particularly relevant and bittersweet chord.

Gothic London proves a fertile ground for storytelling and Green Lung weaves tales of characters both mystic and infernal across Necropolitan with heavy grooves, dark melodies, and riffs galore. It’s just what I needed, when I needed it most, and it will be hard to top this one for me in a year absolutely packed with incredible album releases.

Join us for an early listen of both Orville Peck and Beabadoobee’s upcoming albums!

We’ll be kicking things off with Orville Peck’s Mule at noon and will have posters and buttons for everyone, and a chance to win a trucker hat exclusive to this event! (The tote bags will be a gift with purchase of the album, dropping next week)

Then at 1pm we will be celebrating Beabadoobee’s Pylon with an early listen, sticker sheets and button packs for attendees, and a chance to win a test pressing of the album!

Nashville P***y - High As Hell

Southern-fried and raw as hell, this was my introduction to the band, and I was fortunate enough to get to see them a few years later here in Huntington at (I think?) The Monkey Bar.

It made me fall in love with the band and this album even more.

It’s easy to get hung up on the lyrics, they are often hilarious, but the storytelling paints a broader picture of southern stereotypes and the rock and roll lifestyle once you let yourself marinate in it. And it’s all served up on a pile of kickass riffs, funky grooves, and bluesy heavy metal thunder.

Comparisons to AC/DC, Motörhead, and Skynyrd abound but I also hear plenty of frontman Blaine Cartwright’s former band Nine Pound Hammer’s influence along with some Weedeater parallels. High As Hell in particular takes everything I love about all those bands, laces them with speed, and explodes in a car crash of rock depravity.

This is apparently the first time it has appeared on vinyl, courtesy of Svart, on a wicked denim blue pressing. Happy to have this one on the shelves.

The Linda Lindas - Gotta Get Out

The Linda Lindas spread their wings here with an album that embraces a range of styles, from post-punk and new wave to emo and hardcore. There’s so much going on with this album and every bit of it is awesome.

There’s a through-line of the poppy punk rock they cut their teeth on that helps sort of corral these sounds, but it’s rarely the guiding force, and is felt largely in their commitment to melody and catchy as all hell songwriting.

It’s gutsy in unexpected ways, taking some chances, showing growth, and expressing a wide range of sounds and emotions. It’s dark and moody at times, angry and riotous at others. They could have easily coasted on some viral success, playing up the cute punk angle, been the “fun” addition to any live show lineup. But Gotta Get Out is a declaration that The Linda Lindas are here to stay and are committed to making the most of their career.

We get a phenomenal Hayley Williams collab on “Closer” that’s a sort of winking IYKYK nod to the band’s origins, highlighting the early Paramore in their DNA. But it really is just one facet of who this band is. That track follows “Blood On Our Hands”, a straightforward hardcore beatdown anthem and leads into “Nothing Left” an 80’s new wave bop.

It’s almost like listening to a mixtape, made for you by your best friend.

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor

Groundbreaking in every way, YMO are often credited as the progenitors of everything from synth-pop and J-pop to electro and techno. And you really can hear it all on their second album, Solid State Survivor.

But unlike a lot of prototypical electronic albums that would go on to have wider influence, these tracks never feel crude, rudimentary, or lacking in listenability and appeal. Deftly blending funk and jazz with catchy pop structures and doing things with synthesizers that simply had never been done before, Solid State Survivor feels as modern as it does pioneering.

The tracks are spacey and futuristic, but also lush and full of melody and warmth. Almost avant garde, they sidestep ever feeling pretentious by embracing a quirky playfulness. It never fails to make me smile. An amazing balance of contrasts and a testament to the trio’s skill that everything comes together so beautifully.
