I love a good trinket tray!!

Trinket shelves are having a serious moment. Searches have jumped over 5,000% compared to last year, and if you've got any of the old ones in storage, now's the time to pull them out.

You probably remember them from Grandma's hallway. The little house-shaped wall shelves with tiny cubbies. The wooden printer's type drawers people hung on the wall and filled with thimbles and miniatures. Shadow boxes, curio shelves, whatnot shelves. In the 70s and 80s, every home had a spot for "the little things."

So why now? A couple of things seem to be driving it. Maximalist decor and collected, layered rooms have been trending for a while, and people want somewhere to show off small treasures instead of hiding them in a drawer. The blind box collecting craze is likely a big factor too (think tiny figures people buy by the dozen). All those little collectibles need a home, and a cubby shelf is the perfect fit. That second part is my best read of the trend rather than something I can prove, but it lines up with what shows up on TikTok and Pinterest.

The good news for us: the vintage versions are sturdier, have more character than the new ones, and still turn up cheap at estate sales. A few tips if you're stocking them:

- Style one with small vintage pieces so shoppers can picture it on their wall. An empty shelf is easy to walk past.
- Printer's type trays with the original brass pull or maker's label tend to bring more.
- Hang them at eye level. Wall space sells these; a stack on the floor doesn't.
